Most communities are not the sole community related to their topic, there are really often other communities on the same, or similar topics.
An example: there are a tonne of art related comunities, but only a small handful of them have links to other related communities.
It would be great if there was more of a culture of propping up semi-related communities. This would be particularly useful for helping more niche communities get rolling.
Way ahead on this heh. Did this a while back on our communities. Piefed batching of cross posts helps a bit with discovery. And this should as well.
I disagree, in my experience this tended to lead to the whole. “This interpretation of our niche is better suited for our sister subreddit so your post has been removed”
One thing what i miss from Reddit is that user recommending related subreddits or suggesting subreddits where the post would fit in.
I see this in the fediverse sometimes but it is much rarer.
I agree! If you DM the mods or make a meta post, I feel like they’d happily add a section. Sometimes they aren’t aware of the other communities
If someone messages me with a suggested addition to the sidebar for one of my communities, it makes my day. This is fedi, not reddit – be friendly with your local mod.
I only really run one, but I’d be ecstatic if someone made a good recommendation for a related community.
The moderators on lemmy are just as bad as on reddit in some cases. Fuck your local moderator, in some cases.
They are the reason lemmy doesn’t take off, it’s the same dynamic, every person in authority backs up their compatriots. From government to reddit to lemmy, it’s all the same.
I don’t want to call the moderators fucking losers, but it’s accurate in some cases. And all moderators will back them up. And it is why lemmy is a backwater that enjoys no expansion of the user base.
Without addressing that, this is all pointless. There should be clear rules, enforced equally, with appeals, leading to a jury trial of members for enforcement actions. Without that, we are just a mini reddit.

Nah, this can lead to having many sparsely populated communities. It can discourage new users, and fediverse adoption generally.
For example, if you look in one of the several audiobooks communities you would conclude that the fediverse is a ghost town. However, the actual “community” is in /c/books. If you post about audiobooks in both you won’t get any engagement in the audiobooks communities.
After the great reddit API influx a few years ago a bunch of communities sprang up but were quickly abandoned, contributing to this problem.
There’s actually a community discussing these dead communities and how to go about merging / closing the dead ones, but I can’t remember what its called.
Of course in some cases with larger communities it might make sense to split communities into different topics, but there’s very few communities large enough for that to be genuinely warranted.
If Lemmy automatically generated a list of related communities then mods wouldn’t need to manually maintain a list.
Without addressing the main problem, that moderators that suck have impunity, under the reddit system, where they have influence beyond their groups, lemmy is bound to be simply a group of malcontents banned from reddit.
We need a new system, not reddit fediversed. There is a reason we haven’t taken off in popularity, and you douchy moderators are a big part of that.
