I mean, when talking about battery life: the Switch 2 is shorter whilst the OLED has it last longer. The thing is, there are games I want to play that are exclusive to Switch 2 (like HW: Age of Imprisonment or DK Banaza), I do have a ToTK special edition OLED switch though. The only difference is performance (as it’s 1080p handheld supporting up to 4K at 120 fps).
They are increasing the console price worldwide, it’s ¥49,980 ($309 / 270€) as of now but later it’ll become ¥59,980 ($371 / 324€), so should I purchase it? Also the console will become $500 / 500€ (for now it remains at $450 / 470€) I’ve heard that a new variant is releasing in 2027 with a portable battery, even then is the console still worth purchasing?

Don’t give Nintendo your money
Edit: goddamn, apparently none of you Nintendo fanboys have heard of the phrase/concept “vote with your wallet.”
By continuing to buy products from Nintendo (and other companies) you’re telling them that you and everyone else who bought something are totally on board and a-okay with all the anti-consumer practices they commit. Things like: getting rid of physical copies of games and other media outright, patent trolling, and other generally shitty capitalist practices every multimillion/billion dollar company does.
Unless you want to play Mario Kart World or DK Bananza, then do.
$500+ for 2 games is wild work
Meanwhile on the last steam sale I bought the entire Dishonored series for less than $15. In fact, many steam sales I’ve bought multiple games for about or less than $20.
Crazy, I did the same thing on Switch. It’s almost like buying games on sale saves money regardless of your platform.
Everyone in this thread is like “don’t” and then refuses to offer a single alternative. Because there isn’t one. Not for the price or with the final bastion of physical media, if you care about that sort of thing. Some people just want to play games without spending eight hundred dollars on a Steam Deck. I am as baffled by most of Nintendos decisions as most people who spend too much time online, but holy fuck people, give it a rest.
Yea all the people saying this doesn’t answer OP’s question. OP wants to play the Switch 2 exclusives and is willing to pay for it. Whether or not it’s a good idea or not is their choice.
Fine, you can talk about how it’s not a good value to you but don’t go preaching in a holier than thou manner.
Frankly, given how this community is, I’m surprised they even posted here. They’re gonna have better luck asking on the Nintendo community instead.
Calling Nintendo the budget option is wild.
They literally are in the console space now. Everything else has passed them on prices. Just because their shit is expensive doesn’t mean they aren’t the cheapest entry point.
Yep, sure is. That’s the world we live in now. Although they’ve always been the budget option in comparison. Except for the launch 3DS which was quickly rectified.
Yes, because the hardware is subsidised by the overpriced games. Factor in any reasonable rate of game buying and you’ve broken even in no time flat.
There are plenty of games you can get on sale. Steam also sells $70 games and will also be selling $80 GTA. It’s not like Nintendo is the only one with expensive games. It’s up to the consumer to be smart about where and when they purchase their games. I buy a lot of secondhand first party Nintendo games and it saves me a lot of money. If you only buy all your games digital at launch, it gets expensive no matter what platform you play games on.
Cherry picking a couple of titles to compare is not a great method. On average, games tend to cost less on Steam. It’s well known and there’s lots of sources online. Here’s a few:
https://discover.hubpages.com/games-hobbies/Buy-Game-PC-or-Switch-Pros-Cons
https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2018/08/quantifying-the-switch-tax-or-how-much-for-that-pc-port/
That’s not even taking into account localised prices, which will see huge price drops for a large portion of customers on Steam, while Nintendo thinks everybody’s earning in USD.
When people are complaining about $70 Nintendo games is that not cherry picking all the same? I mean shit they just released Starfox at $50 digital. Tons of games are the same price as steam, and I’ve even gotten a few cheaper. Plus, with physical carts, you can buy used games. Totally valid to point out that on average, games are cheaper on Steam though. Personally, I would like for Nintendo stuff to be cheaper. But that doesn’t mean I regret my purchase either.
Yeah, I know Nintendo’s business practices suck, but this stuff’s relative. When the Switch 2 launched, you could get a Steam Deck for $400 and it was easily a better choice overall. Things have changed considerably now. The fact is, if someone with no dedicated gaming hardware and no technical knowhow wanted to get into gaming right now and money was a factor, The Switch 2 is the best option currently, even after the $50 increase. It will also have at least 6 years of upcoming support, unlike the PS5.
PC is always the best option in general, of course, but it comes at a high price and necessitates having some technological skill. It’s not for everyone.
Actually you’d be surprised how fairly easy using a PC is. I’m about as “plug-and-play” as you can get, but thanks to a computer being a computer and the Internet literally being right there, any questions you have are just a relatively short search away. The more time you spend with the PC just doing things with it, the more you’ll learn and the easier it’ll be.
Take emulation for example. There are many different emulators out there, and even more games to play them with. All you really need to do is read the instructions for how to install one of these emulators, and you’re good to enjoy literally any game you can find for that platform. There are more than a few websites that are literally just file directories for emulated games (they call them “ISOs”). About a year ago I had a PS2, GameCube, and PS3 emulators and probably played too many games. Stuff like the classic Spider-Man 2 game, Tak, Jak & Daxter, Shadow the Hedgehog, Ratchet & Clank, TimeSplitters, Sonic '06, the Sly Cooper series, and the Infamous games.
I’ve been using computers since the Apple IIe, so I’m familiar with using PCs. I’m no expert by any means, but I’m at least competent with them. My first emulator was Nesticle in 1997, so I’ve been emulating in some form or another for almost 30 years now. Using a PC in anything other than a corporation-approved way seems to be becoming a lost art amongst the masses, but I’m always happy to see when someone is willing to learn!
Buy a used ROG Ally for the fraction of the cost of a new Steam Deck. A much bigger library than the Switch 2 and more performance than the Steam Deck.
I’d like to play BoTW and ToTK, but I’m not gonna go spend money to do it.
A) I have principles. B) Nintendo is a multibillion dollar international corporation, that’s recently started charging $80 for games that are most definitely not worth the price. C) save your money for actually useful shit like groceries and gas.
Your principle should be to not generate any kind of demand, not even cultural, and not play their games at all. Otherwise, you’re just cherrypicking for comfort.

Like the OP I answered to who suggested to not pay money for games instead? I was making fun of their „principles“.
Sorry, that wasn’t super clear. Its not always easy to tell how people mean things over text.
You can have money for both though. If you play 500 hours of BOTW or TOTK at $70, that’s 14 cents an hour for your entertainment. A pretty good deal if you ask me.
yeah and if they pirate it they’ll have even more money for gas and groceries or anything else (like games from better companies), several hours of entertainment for absolutely free, and they won’t be giving money to a shitty, greedy corporation that plays stupid games with copyright law.
I’m not really sure what you’re trying to drive at by breaking it down into an hourly cost. Free is still cheaper than 14 cents an hour, and giving money to Nintendo (a multi-billion dollar company that plays fuck fuck games with content creators and acts like a patent troll, among other things) is still bad no matter how insignificant you think $70-$80 is to pay – fun fact, for some of us, that is a significant chunk of our monthly disposable income, and we don’t all want to spend our only spare cash for an entire month on a single game. So there’s a very real possibility they don’t have money for both. Maybe their car grenaded itself this month. Maybe their AC died. Maybe they’ve got a funeral to pay for and they want a pleasant distraction. You don’t know what they can afford, you’re not looking at their checkbook.
Entertainment should not be gatekept by one’s economic prosperity or lack thereof; poor people do not deserve to be bored any more than they deserve to be hungry, or homeless, or sick. I’m a little more irritated when people pirate from small indie developers (but I still accept there is good that can come of this, i.e. try before you buy), but Nintendo on the other hand can eat my entire ass; they do not need anyone whiteknighting for them and their profits online, they pay plenty of lawyers for that so you ought not do it for them for free.
“When people steal shit, they have more money” Yeah no shit dude. Everything you mentioned can just as easily apply to someone who still buys Nintendo games. You said it yourself, you don’t know what someone else can afford. Entertainment is not a basic need and not having a lot of money absolutely does not justify theft of it. There is a whole lot of work and money that goes into the creation of the medium, and no one is just entitled to it. And honestly, it’s especially fucking gross that you’re advocating for stealing indie games too. Nintendo does a lot of amoral bullshit. But justifying theft of something that is not a basic need is also wrong. If you don’t have a lot of money to spend on gaming, sales and used games are your friend. And buying used even backs up your stance of not giving money to a corporation.

If you think you NEED a video game badly enough to steal it, I desperately urge you to go outside and touch grass. It is not the only form of entertainment that exists and you are not entitled to it. Guess what? I’m poor and I don’t steal. I save up for games I want, or I find something else to entertain myself. You’re reaching so far to justify this that you obviously have an over active imagination, why not use it to entertain yourself?

Also, comparing white torture to not getting a video game is actually insane. If you’re in a space where there is ANY mental stimulation, you are not being tortured by the definition of your own source. So maybe you should try rereading it. Out loud. Slowly. Just really make sure you understand what you’re incorrectly claiming is a source to back your logic.

You put all of that much better than I would have.
I try, thank you
Or you can say “Fuck Nintendo” and sail away
Exactly. Save your money, pirate their shit because it’s ethically right.
