Just blocked lemmy.ml from my Lemmy account, and I swear to god it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done on this platform. My homepage feels actually clean now.
For the past few months I’d been seeing a lot of tankie posting and pretty much far-left propaganda on my feed. It got tiring enough that I finally checked my blocked-user list, and realized pretty much everyone I’d blocked was from lemmy.ml. So I just blocked the whole instance instead.
Saying this as someone who considers themselves a leftist: I used to think Lemmy itself was an echo chamber. Turns out lemmy.ml was the problem the entire time. Probably the reason I tolerated it for so long is that I agreed with a lot of what they posted, but like an oversaturated meme, I’d had enough. Browsing the platform was starting to feel way too tiring instead of fun, which defeats the point of being here in the first place.
The breaking point was seeing some dude post a “meme” implying North Korea and China are basically communist utopias and that the West sucks. I mean, the West does suck, but come on - you’re saying North Korea is the ideal the West should strive for? What the hell…
Could someone give some examples of these leftist propaganda posts? I just browse all top day, maybe they get diluted enough for me to overlook these… i’ve seen this argument pass by so many times.
Tiring*
It’s called cognitive dissonance, the less your worldview makes sense the more tiresome it becomes to hear counter arguments. You used to be able to just dismiss them as „russian trolls“ but now that doesn’t feel right anymore, you feel like you actually have to engage, and this takes energy. Much easier to just shut it out completely, just take comfort in your personal bubble, and only engage with straw men arguments, the ones that are obviously wrong (and hence not used by anyone).
Have fun in your bubble, have fun believing that Russia is gonna collapse any day now for the coming 8 years, the 57th nuclear sanctions package is really gonna do it, have fun believing that the army that spent 4 years taking Sheviakivka is gonna be in Berlin the week after, have fun thinking the people that sold you the Gaza genocide have the best intentions when they say war is the only answer in Ukraine, wish you all the best.
Wait y’all like Russia again? What?!
Where in my comment does it say I like Russia? Accusing people that are against war and in favor of negotiated settlement of being in cahoots with the enemy is as old as writing.
I think I’m gonna save myself the headache and just block you and move on with my life.
Case in point.
“Far left” is a stretch. Seems more like a submission kink thing.
Experimenting with blocklists is fine and how you find your comfort zone on Lemmy.
I once made an experiment in which I blocked lemmy.world - not out of spite, but to just see what the rest of Lemmy has to offer. Turns out, quite much!
Still, too many niche communities are hosted on .world, so here I am again.
I tend to agree that the majority of communities are hosted on 3 major instance’s its a concern that makes it difficult remove any of the 3 or 4 mega instances regardless of policies or practices.
I see many saying just boycott or block .world but, a decent source of communities im in are listed there. I know it’s against the spirit of fediverse but I don’t see that changing any time soon.
It’s an inherent problem with having both users and communities on the same instances, and just how humans tend to operate in general in that we automatically gravitate to others and clump together.
I think it was @rglullis@communick.news who was saying that in an ideal world there would be two types of instances, one for users and one that only served as hosting space for communities. That way you could block or defederate user groups without losing access to entire communities.
Of course, we’re way past the point where reorganization into a structure like that is feasible. But it’s interesting to think about.
Thank you! At least I don´t feel so alone now. :)
we’re way past the point where reorganization into a structure like that is feasible
I am still optimistic about it. It will be impossible to make one huge push in this direction, but slowly people will come to realize that this is the most sensible approach. For example, I’ve noticed that !nba@nba.space started to get more activity because !nba@lemmy.world is considering moving out of LW, but are spending a lot of time debating over a lateral move. If only they had accepted when I first invited them to join as mods from the topic-specific instance, this would’ve never been an issue.
Block me too, I don’t want nerds reading my posts
Why not just use your subscriptions? People use all and then act all entitled when they have to deal with everything. It’s weird.
Nobody is acting entitled. Maybe with small size of lemmy, opting out is better than subscribing to individual communities?
I just moved to lemmy.zip from dbzer0 and before that, world, mainly because I want to be the one blocking, I don’t want my instance to block for me. I must not be subscribed to the right places, because I just don’t see a whole lot of CCP/RUS apologia? I’m pretty good at passing over shit I know I won’t agree with though, so it might just not be registering.
How do you cope with seeing feddit.org comments?
Yeah, me either. I wish there were waves of militant leftists. Would certainly make a change.
I don’t see this stuff either. Maybe it’s because I don’t subscribe to meme communities.
I have never noticed any problem with lemmy.ml.
Block all the low-quality meme/image content if lemmy feels tiring. Stop consuming garbage.
Lemmy.ml isn’t a leftist instance. Tankies are radical centrists.
Bunch of labels being thrown around. How do you keep track? I just sorta identify them all as extremist crazies. Its one big group, that admittedly, if you put them all in one space, would definitely not mix well.
Well you see, I’m an extremist crazy too. I’m an anarcho-antirealist. I think consensus reality is a social construct the rich use to control our mythocultural perceptions of the world, which is why transphobia exists. I want to abolish the idea of reality.
Ya, but that’s fun. Too many words tho. Gotta learn to just be if you want to give up reality.
I identify as a goddess and I’m in a gay trans polycule with a sharkplane, a goth ghost girl, and the Speedforce from the Flash comics. We play video games together. That’s antirealist praxis.
I applaud your worldbuilding, but you are making realities. Antireality involves letting all of that go.
Reality is objective. I believe in no such thing. Instead of an objective universe, we should believe in a subjective multiverse. Countless perceptual worlds, designed by ordinary people for fun, kindness, and justice.
I prefer to abandon the worlds and the designing. Be.
I’m on .ml and just don’t see this. I moved here from .world after the cat food ban. The stupidity burned too much for me to stay there. I’m unsubscribed to most of the lemmy communities where the political crap is, so maybe that helps.
Should i ask what the “cat food ban” was?
It’s a long story but basically after some stupid drama, lemmy.world banned discussion of cat food unless there was scientific evidence presented that the cat food was healthy for the cat. The drama had been about vegan cat food discussions in the vegan discussion group. Vegan cat food turns out to be a thing and appears to have enough approvals to be sold in pet stores, but people on .world wanting to talk about it should come over here to .ml. No I wasn’t a participant in the vegan group discussion itself. I made some posts in the surrounding drama thread that you can probably find in my .world profile from shortly after I joined.
??? I’m still confused.
Lemmy.world’s admin (not community mods but the actual instance admin) decreed that lemmy.world was going to be like Wikipedia, where anything controversial that you posted had to be accompanied by a research citation, more or less. The specific statement under dispute was that brand XYZ vegan cat food was ok to feed to your cat. A bunch of idiots howled “cats are obligate carnivores, hur hur! They can’t survive on a vegan diet! Mods, delete that comment!!!” and the site admin sided with the idiots. So I had to escape from the stupidity. Are you still confused? Btw the vegan cat food is perfectly fine for cats as far as I can tell. No I’m not about to go look for
diffslinks so some of those details may be garbled by now.I don’t think the citation policy was ever enforced on anything else, but anything that crazy is hard to forget.
.world also defederated hexbear because it didn’t like hexbear’s politics, but I’m a regular on hexbear’s covid community (which is pretty good and not that political) so I had to go elsewhere for it. I can still reach it from .ml but this convinced me that the federation model is a failure. There’s no giant Spez overlord who can censor you, but there are 100 petty instance admins who can censor you instead. I’m still on Lemmy to stay away from Spez though.
where anything controversial that you posted had to be accompanied by a research citation, more or less
WHAT that is BONKERS
oh man, I forgot about that shit. I’m pretty sure I got banned from some communities for that.
🤷 I just blocked them back and moved on.
I use Lemmy.world. I don’t see any of this drama, about cat food or leftists. I do see posts that used to be regular at Reddit, with decent discussion.
Gotta throw Hexbear, Lemmygrad, and Exploding Heads in there too if your instance hasn’t defederated from 'em.
Don’t forget db0
Don’t forget hilariouschaos.
Pro russia propaganda is generally contained in ml own communities. The tiresome thing for me is zionist tolerant instances and communities and fake palestinians supporter who both side the colonizers and the colonized or defend rhe democrats support for the colonizers
No I seem them regularly spreading pro russian propaganda and demeaning jabs against ukrainans in .world communities. The instance has to many disgusting users for it to be waved away with the “few bad apples” defense
The instance has to many disgusting users for it to be waved away with the “few bad apples” defense
Meanwhile .world has Zionists modding it’s major coms
“A few bad apples” is not a defense, it’s a condemnation. A few bad apples spoil the bunch.
My argument was not to say that there is only few bad apples on the ml just that in my experience I don’t see their propaganda that much often outside of their bubble
Fair enough. I seem to notice them pushing it everywhere.
All the fucking libscolding about ml existing
You realize that ml develops the platform. Honestly perhaps piefed is more your speed. Or maybe go watch Hutch or something idk.
God I’m glad I’m not a Reddit liberal anymore.
Typical libslop from 4am here. Turbolibs love to support authoritarian regimes like capitalist Russia. Don’t take this libposting seriously, it’s libriously libdiculous. Lib lib lib.
