I’m not anti-AI, but I’m most definitely anti-corporate greed. I wish there was moderation in all of this. I wish there were regulations instead of letting companies blindly buy hardware before it’s even made based on what they or their competitors might be doing 2 years from now. Fuck that.
With that said, yes, AI is a helpful tool, yes, I’m using it every day at work, and yes, I can do without it no problem - just like I have for many many years.
It’s a good accelerator for mundane tasks, and usually a good indicator that you could farm those tasks out to an intern.
You should give AI the same responsibility and trust that you give to a green intern because it will confidently fuck things up and requires an experienced eye to review anything it produces.
If AI went away tomorrow, we could probably take the cost and redistribute it to a graduate or two.
What’s scary is that AI as a service is really expensive, and the AI companies have been selling tokens as a severe loss all this time.
If you’re that dependent on AI, what happens when you have to bear the full price?
You’re going to give up your AI girlfriend, is what.
This is really what has put me off AI, yes there are the ethical and environmental considerations and they worry me too but ultimately it’s the price, and the knowledge that the price inevitably will increase.
I don’t want to build all my workflows on a system that not only do I not really control I don’t even have a fixed price for. That just seems like a really bad design.
I also dislike using Microsoft 365 for the exact same reason. I do not want to rest my business model on someone else’s business model.
Man the last thing i want to do is go through moon rune math on wikipedia or Stack Overflow when i need to solve a well defined problem in programming like the ye old days.
Dude forgot that its not something like computers or the internet. Jobs DONT depend on AI. AI is only used for assistance. Heck AI uses the same tools as humans to perform the same task so yeah no. If AI dissappear tomorrow (which a lot us will want to cuz RAM prices…nonsensical AI videos images etc), my job will be even more secured. No issues if AI goes away. Also, in some sensitive client projects, companies dont even allow the use of AI so it doesn’t really matter
Also, in some sensitive client projects, companies dont even allow the use of AI so it doesn’t really matter
Which is prohibitively expensive because of the RAM prices. So AI is making it financially unviable to run AI models. Great what a wonderful feedback loop, can’t see that ending badly.
Yeh possibly a little early to pull that card, might make more sense for like “the internet” or something where it’s had about 30 years to become an essential part of people’s lives. Unlike a lot of the Lemmy audience who would clearly not be the type of people he’s thinking of, I actually do make use of some of those tools so I should really be exactly one of the types he’s thinking about but while I’ve developed that habit and would likely notice the absence of the tools for about a fortnight, it’d hardly make a massive difference.
I did the job before without it so yeah.
The fuck was this clown doing 5 years ago? 10? Begging for change until slightly more advanced chat bots could do his “job” for him? What the fuck?
Dude can’t even think about all the people who don’t use AI for anything, much less work. On the other hand, not having to deal with AI spam, marketing, slop, fake news, rage bait, crap products, etc. would be great.
This betrays such a lack of imagination (and probably empathy), as he is completely incapable of conceiving that people don’t use LLMs as much as he does.
Haters are absolutely people that use it all the time but are against it? For clout? To simply hate on something?
I’m so close to being able to retire on all this clout I’ve amassed by not using AI.
Definitely. I haven’t even begun to use it yet and its already pissing me off. If I touch the phone in just the wrong way it starts doing AI at me. Turns out it starts doing AI at me if I hold the power button down to turn it off. Imagine my anger.
Every time I turn my Windows laptop on it throws more and more copilot bollocks at me that I dont need or want and dont have the time to try and disable so I just have to spend the whole time fighting it off like a dog trying to hump my leg when I’m trying to cook dinner.
You should install Linux!
If I touch the phone in just the wrong way it starts doing AI at me. Turns out it starts doing AI at me if I hold the power button down to turn it off.
Execs: “AI engagement is extremely high.”

Your metaphor is perfect!
I try to search - AI humps my leg. I shop online - useless AI assistant humps my leg. I phone a company for customer service - oh you better believe some stupid AI voice humps my leg.
How could I ever live without it?
Win debloater. You can kill cp entirely and save your bullshit gutting script to run again in the future
Please don’t abbreviate copilot and please don’t make me explain why.
Oh no no no that was deliberate. I want that association to tske flight and fuck their branding
You are playing a dangerous game with cheese pizza.
i have no idea what that means
EdiT: ih. yes, of course. Cock pirate. Apologies for the slow draw, been building a basement brewery all day
Cheese pizza is also perverted. You’re covering a perfectly good pizza with stolen rotted breast milk from an animal. Vegan cheese pizza is fine.
Fuck that. Cow milk goes moo oo oo oo oo.
…and yes, I’m Nordic and tolerate it fucking perfectly. The only American I’ve ever dated got into this with me so hard I thought she’d die on the sidewalk out of pure spite right there. “Milk is for baby cows,” my hairy ass. It’s for delicious fucking pizzas, amongst many other delicious things.
…also if you’ve been in Finland for close to a fucking decade and haven’t figured out that yes, we fucking drink it just like that maybe it’s time to figure out a new area in the world to settle. Like a Polynesian Volcano. Fuuuck.
Oh yeah good point, animal breast milk is also connected to race by right wing weirdos. Source: https://theconversation.com/milk-a-symbol-of-neo-nazi-hate-83292
Here’s a great (and by great I mean awful) historical quote on milk from 1933:
“A casual look at the races of people seems to show that those using much milk are the strongest physically and mentally, and the most enduring of the people of the world. Of all races, the Aryans seem to have been the heaviest drinkers of milk and the greatest users of butter and cheese, a fact that may in part account for the quick and high development of this division of human beings.”
Um did buddy not exist before AI? We got this far without it so…
I think the most upsetting part of AI is discovering how many people were so ready for it, like they were just waiting for something to show up that they could offload their lack of creativity or responsibility onto.
I instantly lost friends because the first thing out of their mouth was ‘thank God I never have to pay anyone to commission art ever again and the little guy has access to good OC art.’
These people were not functioning before AI.
No absolving the LLM-obsessed but I believe the average person is just so overwhelmed with society that they salivate for easy answers, just so that something is easy in their lives.
I imagine LLMs wouldn’t be as persuasive if humans had the leisure to satisfy their curiosity, indulge in artistic expression, and socialize with their loved ones. Instead we’re inculcated to this rat race and get surprised when people fall for any scraps they can get their hands on.
Some people are mindless by nature, but this set-up was nutured (intentionally or not) by those wanting to exploit the commoners.
I had this sort of sympathy until I saw how openly hostile people were in their open jealousy over talented people. I kept running into these people for years who were just so angry at the fact that they had to pay someone for their time and talent.
This gets to be a little offshooty for other things I tend to have less popular opinions on, but it’s the same people who feel that piracy should be the norm. No art, performance, or entertainment should be allowed to compel payment and it should all be free. This includes people who absolutely froth about advertisments on their Youtube videos. Granted 5 ads in a row is ridiculous but peraonally I want my artists and performers to be paid egregiously and I will suffer some small inconveniences to make sure they ateast get something from me.
But I think the venn diagram of people who are obsessed with AI and the people who just take offense to having to spend money on anything is a pretty tight one.
I’m staunchly anti-AI, pro-piracy, and pro-adblock. You should never pay for anything made by Disney, Warner Brothers, or Paramount. You should never watch an ad served by Google or Meta. And you should never use Elon Musk’s child porn nazi machine or Sam Altman’s child murderer machine.
There’s no ethical consumption under capitalism. But you can make your consumption less unethical, by refusing to give time or money to billionaires.
That doesn’t change the fact that artists and creatives have no other outlet than to be beholden by their platform. Unless you’re going and buying hatsune miku fanart prints at your farmers market, unethucal consumption under captitalism also means trying to find out how to provide for the staff who still contribute to meaningful art, even if that is the set designer for an Avengers slop movie.
Yeah, obviously you should throw money at creators you like on bandcamp and patreon.
But Owen Dennis ain’t getting My money if I subscribe to paramount plus for Among Us, and he sure as shit ain’t getting any money if I watch an ad on cartoon network’s website while trying to figure out how to watch Infinity Train. I really love Infinity Train, but you can’t watch it legally anymore. And it’s not like Owen gets a big bonus if enough people subscribe to catch Among Us.
So anyway I just sent Owen Dennis some money on Patreon to show My appreciation for his amazing cartoons. And I’m still gonna block as many ads as I can!
Yup. There’s a large population of humans that really just objectively suck.
He existed but he must never have actually bothered learning to do anything.
All of these people that want to end billionaires, or reduce their accumulated wealth, I have one question: if billionaires disappeared tomorrow would you still get through an entire day of your life? Imagine if the rich were eaten? Would you really be willing to give them up?
🍆💦
Oh yeah, I like the way you talk.
Look man, im already starving, you dont need to make me hungrier comparing it like that
Me, a Meth Addict, constantly trying to blow meth smoke in your face and stab you with meth needles: “You’re going to have a pretty hard time getting by without it!”
Me, an ADHD sufferer, “Yeah, meth is terrible. But please don’t try to ban amphetamines universally.”
Right now I could probably get meth easier than adderall even with my prescription.
Probably. The system is broken. But let’s not blame a mindless, emotionless chemical for how it is being abused and misused. Throw rocks at the assholes causing harm, not the needle laying in the street.
I guess we just have to accept meth being forced into everything because the cat is out of the bag!
Meth is the future. If you don’t start now, you’ll get left behind.
It seems like most of my friends are on addy, so… yes?
I use AI at work everyday. If it went away the only thing that would change is I’d just go back to googling stuff
And if googling went away I’d just go back to those giant books with the animals on them.
You’d need to lift the monitors off them first.
Has anyone ever opened one of those books? For all we know, they could just be a bunch of blank pages on the inside
I’ve opened some. It’s genius, it’s like a giant webpage with lots of information, but without all the ads, cookie banners, etc. Unfortunately the ones I have don’t seem to support any way to quickly search in the text. Though they’ve also thought about that, rather than implementing search these books tend to have a big overview at the start with all the separate chapters and sometimes a search index of commonly searched words at the end. Quite genius for what’s effectively just a neat monitor stand
I have read these ancient tomes. The knowledge does exist.
Nah it’s actually just analog AI, someone opened one a few years ago and that’s where all this mess started
CIA chatbot
Hey there buddy, wanna overthrow the prime minister of Malaysia with me?
As soon as you answer “but why models?”
Mail Models
Buttery males!
Hilarious LMAO
sames. That said, if AI went away, we have a few already-deployed systems that would go poof too. They increase throughput of the humans doing real work (we’re not building reverse centaurs here). Since we implemented them, we’ve not needed to hire more.
