Are “smart appliances” able to tell you their state in an app? It would be cool if you could have a single open-source type of app on your phone where you could glance and see that all your appliances are off and your doors and windows are secure.
I haven’t looked into it, but those are the only smart features I’d really want.
Not sure about ovens and such, but in general the app you’re talking about is Home Assistant.
while you’re there… don’t forget to check the faucet, windows, cat bowls, and lock the door on the way out.
please do remember to keep your keys in your hand the entire time, and don’t be a dummy like yesterday and set the phone down right before you leave and lock the door.
I’ve taught myself to create a visual fingerprint of when I do things that normally forget if I’ve done or would be bad if I ever forgot. I remember the surrounding scenery and my exact mannerisms when I do things like locking the door or turning something off.
That way, when I have those doubts I reply it in my mind and see all the unique details related to me performing the task. “Oh, yeah, I did lock the front door because I had to look at my key to make sure it was right side up.” And the doubt disappears.
Whenever I lock my door, I do something unique and unusual at the same time. Like knocking the door knob twice, or tapping my forehead. When I try to remember if I locked the door or not, I’m no longer concerned if I’m just remembering locking it from a previous day, because I remember doing the unique action too
I’ve just started doing the thing that Samuel L. Jackson’s character does in The Long Kiss Goodnight and singing “I locked my door na-na-na-na, locking my door na-na-na-na. Keys in my hand na-na-na-na” etc.
Smart.
I’ve decided to just leverage my ego. Past me was in a good state of mind and is competent and would not have made that mistake. I wouldn’t distrust past me, would I?
