If mine are dirty, dishwasher wouldn’t work anyway. If they aren’t, why are they in there? Dishwasher works great on some things but not others, it won’t remove egg, avocado, and wouldn’t scrub the skillets for me.
I do use Dawn and briefly soak if necessary. Briefly. Most of my pans are older than any of my kids (so over 30 at least) and I’ve had to comprehensively strip and reseason two of them, once each, and reseason all of them when I let my husband wash them before he understood them. I got him a chainmail scrubber and explained no overnight soak and if you don’t want to deal with it throw it in the bottom oven dirty.
They just get so so nice and nonstick when they’re in good shape.
I mean it’s fine so long as you set it to a short cycle and auto dry.
like using a wood chipper to sharpen your pencils. hot water, steel wool, and 5 minutes of your time will save you the 20 minutes per pan of removing rust and reseasoning.
bravo on the troll post, though; i’m legitimately furious
I clean cast iron how I want, purists be damned. If it needs seasoning again, then it’s done. That’s all there is to it. It’s cast iron ffs; you’re not gonna hurt it, it’s gonna outlive you.
Yeah, let it soak! That’s great for the seasoning as well.
Removing bits of rust and re-seasoning after every dishwasher cycle is a bit more works than just cleaning by hand tho
Does the dishwasher even ruin seasoning anymore? Since soap stopped using lye I heard it’d pretty gentle on seasoning these days
A few years ago I had the bright idea to just use dishwasher powder for regular washing up. The cast iron pan kept needing to be reseasoned until I stopped doing that. I think that stuff might still have lye, or at least something harsh enough to mess up cast iron.
yep, all of the mythos about having to baby delicate cast iron basically came from the era of lye soap. . soap isnt caustic anymore, so as long as you dry it when its done (or throw it in a warm oven to dry off) you’ll be fine.
The prolonged water + heat is still bad. Last time my partner put it in there, the season was still on there, but didn’t feel as smooth anymore, and there were a few rusty spots.
This. My dishwasher doesn’t seem to “strip” the pans. I rarely have to do more than heat a little oil and wipe it around the pans if they go through the dishwasher.
“a bit more”?^^
Yeah. Hours more, unless you don’t mind the rust taste.
yo that extra Fe is nutrition bro
Naw it’s like 5 min. Just scrub off the rusty bits with a steel sponge and then do one quick new layer of seasoning. The dishwasher won’t strip all the seasoning or anything
Ooh lookit me with my fancy dishwasher!
my parents ;-;

Can I turn the handles in so they fit properly?
Turn them over while you’re at it. The bottom should face down.
That’s the only way to harvest the dishwasher juice.
Don’t worry about it, they’ll turn when you slam the dishwasher door hard enough.
No.
Ok. Dented dishwasher liner coming up.
the real gauntlet is reseasoning all of those pans and sharpening all of those knives before their owner gets home
That’s not a dishwasher, that’s just an expensive drying rack
- Is a silverware area thingy not standard or was it removed?
- Who puts good sharp knives in the washer? I was always told you should hand wash them.
This is 100% ragebait lol
-
Anecdotally, newer machines have removable baskets. Some also have a thin rack at the top specifically for silverware. (Mine has it, they lie horizontally and free up dish space on the bottom rack)
-
Psychopaths. But that’s the meme. You’re not supposed to put them or cast iron skillets in there.
I don’t care. I didn’t buy a dishwasher because i still wanted to had wash some. If it doesn’t survive the dishwasher i don’t want it.
Love the silverware up top, good piece of gear.

This might be ragebait but people are definitely serious about this shit. I don’t know what they think happens inside a dishwasher, it’s just some water splashing about followed by some heat. “Is it dishwasher safe? It doesn’t say it is!” Fuck off, just put it in the top rack and be done with it.
Some plastics will melt even on the top rack. Some older plastics will actively breakdown and release junk in the dishwasher.
Some metal corrodes quickly with hot water, soap, and hot air. It also offends your ancestral spirits.
On the plus side, it’s pretty straightforward that it can either be cleaned in the dishwasher or in the oven.
Aluminium is a big one, that shit will oxidise to hell and back in a dishwasher as the detergent is caustic.
In all my years of dishwashering, I have only really offended my ancestral spirits once, but I doubt they will even remember it since there is so much else to be disappointed about.
Plus if they saw this, they’ve also seen more than enough batein’ to care about a rusty pan or 3.
The cast iron is wild and obv just a rage bait post, but most kitchen knives are fine in the d/w. Have a victorinox 8" and its still good as new. Purist will tell you I’m wrong but I’m not.
Shitty knives definitely can’t handle it
For number 2, that’s part of the joke I would guess. I didn’t even see them before you commented.
Hand wash knives due to the handle. The blade doesn’t care too much especially if you’re sharpening them occasionally.
I just commit to replacing the handle every few years. Well worth the convince imo.
There’s a brand of Japanese knives that don’t have a handle, one piece.
Sha Ra Ku Mono
The best knife I have ever held. Buy it for life. There’s another Japanese brand called Global and they are one piece but not as amazing to hold as the Sha Ra Ku Mono. My wife was a professional chef so we splurged to get her a full set over the years. The bread knife is a fucking chainsaw man… You have to really be careful or it’ll bite you HARD.
I think only one place outside of Japan sells them. https://seacut.com/collections/sha-ra-ku-mono
My knife handles are fine after years of dishwasher, what kind of dishwasher are you using??
Those are probably carbon steel and will be fucked if you put them in the dishwasher.
Those cast irons don’t even look like they’ve been through the dishwasher once.
That’s because you can’t see the unseasoned insides.
What is this from? Lol
Think I found it. Looks like its from the show Santa Clarita Diet.
It is, and Netflix killed it just like that cast iron skillet
It was a great show that used Timothy Oliphant perfectly and was cut down in its prime
I loved that show. Then netflix canceled it, like they cancel everything.
This person is a monster.
Im totally not crying right now.
I see nothing wrong with this.
