Perfumes and colognes give me headaches and make me nauseated so I’d rather people just didn’t wear them at all.
Perfumes are a very common trigger for migraines for people who get them. For me it’s the number one trigger. Strong expensive perfumes are some of the worst for me.
I have to avoid indoor crowds or eating out during times when people will be out with lots of scents on. I take drugs before a wedding etc and leave as soon as I can. The best ones are outdoors.
In business I have bypassed interviewees who wore perfurme/cologne to the interview in favor of less qualified canditates who didn’t. I have also dropped suppliers, vendors, dealers etc… because they showed up to a business meeting wearing a cologne/perfume.
NO. Perfume is the worst. ppl need to stop wearing it in hospitals and community centers. other people should feel comfortable with being in public too. Comfort matters more than your need to feel entitled to validation for stenching out places. It’s like assholes with music and no headphones. this is public. as in other people can be here too. its not here for you to work out your narcissistic fucking fantasies. We arent your fucking background characters you self absorbed weenus.
There is the saying “Perfume should be discovered, not announced”, and I totally agree. A bit like being considerate with headphones.
If I’m down wind of you and I smell you, you are an evil person and I hate you.
If I walk through a place and I smell where you have been, you are an evil person and I hate you.
If I order food and I can smell you on my food, you are an evil person and I hate you.
If I’m walking through a place where you were once standing and I can taste you, you are an evil person and I hate you.
I don’t care if it’s BO or perfume or lotion. You are an evil person and I hate you.
It’s kind of like… I dunno, a delicate balance. A good, subtle fragrance? Love catching a whiff. Someone wearing something that smells like they soaked their whole body in straight alcohol? Kill me.
Like, putting in the effort to pick out a pleasant scent, male or female and getting recognized is the good part. Wearing buckets of the stuff should be considered olfactory assault.
I recently got into fragrances and they are great but I think you need to chill if people can smell you randomly like that in public. I’m no expert, like I said I just got into it, but my understanding is people shouldn’t be able to tell unless they are inside your personal space.
Do you by chance live in a relatively sparsely populated area? People are in each others’ personal space constantly in densely populated areas
That’s fair enough. I wouldn’t say I live somewhere sparsely populated but definitely no New York/Tokyo or anything. If someone has their face near my chest we are probably quite familiar with each other.
Please don’t put that much perfume… My nose is pretty sensitive to perfume and it makes me sneeze. Most of them smell like dust. I never understood why people try to smell that strongly of dust.
Yeah right? I hate perfume, most just mell like chemicals.
Agreed. The “good” aromas are always dusty, kind of mummified versions somehow, and then the chemicals mixed in just sting your nose, and make you gag. I do not understand, who finds smelling that pleasant.
I roll around in my attic every morning so I’ll smell like a holiday

Guys are wearing too much perfume at work but get upset when I ask them to cut back on the perfume. Of course it’s still perfume no matter what they call it.
they get upset with you when they are the ones encroaching other people’s spaces with their stench? that is some predatory bully thinking there.
I think they are mainly upset about me calling it perfume. They always cut back if I ask.
Since you are getting a lot of hate in here, let me say you smell great. I do enjoy when I’m coming through the entry door at work and whoever went through it before me smelled good. I think the smell intolerant have to win in the office - it’s an enclosed environment and some people have actual allergies. But personally I do love it when I, say, walk into the bathroom and smell perfume not shit, it’s a surprise and a welcome one. And perfumery is olfactory art.
Basenotes is a nice site if you are into perfume. It’s the only social media forum I use besides Lemmy.
If someone can smell you outside and not know that the smell came from you, then you are wearing 100x too much perfume. It should not be possible to smell you just by passing you on the sidewalk.
🤮
I’m so glad I don’t waste my money on that shit
Never heard such a phrase even in movies, but I heard(and thought too) “Who the fuck poured a bucket of concentrate on their stupid head? Impossible to breath!” many times.
I’ve personally heard “Who smells so good?” while out in public many times, particularly when wearing Amouage Guidance or Guidance 46, but also with other fragrances like Maison Crivelli Hibiscus Mahajad, Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait, and Frederic Malle Portrait of a Lady.
You generally don’t hear people who are offended by perfumes, while you do hear the ones who like it.
For me there is nothing worse than walking in nature behind someone whose perfume I can smell, I’m outside to get fresh air not to smell Hibiscus Mahajad Baccarat 540 or whatever.
Do you have recommendations for mens fragrance? Fresh scents are what I try to lean into.
I enjoy making “perfumes” out of essential oils. I never want to overpower my natural scent but rather blend very lightly to the point I think no one else will notice but me. It’s a treat for myself and maybe to whoever gets a hug. Sounds like you’re enjoying yourself, but be careful of acclimating too much.
I had this basil plant that somehow was always in bloom. I’d brush my arms against it in the morning; free perfume. Smelled amazing too. You can also crush a leaf and use that.
I actively avoid people who wear feagrences.
I’ve never smelled a cologne or perfume that wasn’t utterly offensive.
I think more people should be aware how offensive a strong smell can be. There have been more than a few people who I genuinely have negative opinions of, and it basically stems from them wearing perfume or cologne.
Olfactory nails on a chalkboard.
That is because many people don’t know wtf they are doing. I usually wear two splashes of cologne and that is already plenty. I also wear rather inoffensive smells, since I prefer sweet or fresh ones. Others seem to just shower in musk
I remember there was a classroom i couldn’t enter without getting nauseous because one of the guys there doused himself in some kind of incredibly potent perfume
The stank lingered too, after a weekend the smell would be just as strong
Seriously, what the fuck is up with highschool boys in the last decade or so going bat shit crazy with the perfume??? I feel like we have reached new heights of olfactory toxic masculinity torture.
The first time I even thought about cologne was for a formal business meeting in my late twenties. The closest I got to wearing fragrances (not gonna lie, I kind of hate that term, now that I’ve heard it so often) in highschool was aftershave; I literally didn’t know a single guy who wore perfume (and very nearly no girls either), despite going to a fancy private school with a bunch of rich assholes. Times change, huh.
Why does this trigger me so much? I actively avoid teenagers and cross the street because of the smell now. And that one colleague who smells like a horrid concoction of axe body smell (kill me now) and Hugo Boss The Scent Eau de Toilette (I know what it’s called because he constantly, invariably, incessantly talks about it). I guess some especially immature adults are affected by the trend as well. Wtf.
Okay. Rant over. I’m done. Gonna go hug my cats now to recover (thank you, home office).
highschool boys in the last decade or so
Not even close, in the 00’s it was Lynx/Axe, before that Teen Spirit. Boys covering themselves in scents instead of showering isn’t a new thing.
Yeah, I remember the Axe era. I guess at my highschool it was deodorant more than cologne. Still, I feel like stuff has gotten especially bad more recently. Or maybe I’ve just gotten older and more annoyed by it *sobs*
