      Nothing odd about that.

The reason why America has the best food is because of this. Wave after wave is immigrants from all over the world over several hundred years, bringing their food culture, adapting, mixing with indigenous food, feeling free to experiment, and mixing with other cultures.

Just don’t call me out because “Canada”. I love Canada, have a Canada escape plan, and appreciate the differences. It’s that there’s much more culture shock going to various parts of the US than their geographically similar places in Canada.

It’s funny, my issue with it has always been that they add ham with it. Fuck that, give me pepperoni and some sort of (not shitty green bell) pepper like a jalapeno or banana pepper and pineapple is great.

So I used to be opposed to pineapple on pizza, because I was a prick purist.

Then a friend who got me to try pineapple jalapeño pizza. That sweet and spicy mix changed me, and I’ve become much more adventurous with food in general.

My new outlook on weird food is that if it seems like a weird pairing but is somewhat popular, it’s probably amazing.

Unless it has cilantro. Keep that soapy weed out of my food.

My favorite pizza was a BLT, now I’m a veggie and make LT pizza with mayo and it’s close but not the same. The fake impossible chicken is getting pretty good, but no fake beacon I’ve tried comes close.

Fun fact, “Hawaiian” pizza with pineapple was invented at Satellite Pizza in Chatham-Kent, a small town in rural Ontario, Canada.

Pizza is already made with fruit as one of its centerpieces.

Pineapple and Ham are a wonderful combination.

They go really well in a tangy sweet marinara on baked bread. Coated in cheese, too.

          So yes

I think Hawaiian pizza is one of those foods I’ve always hated because I had poor experiences with it growing up. Sort of like shepherd’s pie, which I only knew of through the abomination served at the high school caf.

But recently, I tried it at a new pizzeria that opened near me. They honestly used real ham like you would get at an Easter banquet. Not the processed sandwich meat. And that was actually really good with pineapple!

I am compelled. When poor Italians came to the US way back in the day, they were getting jobs where they made a bit more money which allowed them to basically unlock a lot more toppings than they used to use in Italy. They would add all sorts of weird things. I don’t recall anyone using pineapple at that time but if they had access to it I’m 100% sure they would’ve tried bc it matched the spirit of their other toppings ventures. Anyway, pineapple, bacon bits, and jalapeño is a really good combo.

The other way round. Americans are actually quite conservative when it comes to pizzatoppings. Most Americans have never heard of tuna or potatoes as toppings for example. They seem to stick to a handful of different meats, and that is basically it. There is a lot more variety in other countries, and also in Italy in particular.

One of my grandparents is an Italian immigrant and it’s very much this. Grew up with “here try this” and “have more” because they’d be damned if anyone under their roof went hungry or felt like they had to hold back. They also like all sorts of pizza toppings, because they had to eat nothing but dandelions while hiding from Nazis.

Having grown up poor myself I’m a lot the same way as an adult, too. If someone wants food or drink in my home or while out with me they get it, no questions asked. Adventurousness is encouraged, and a happy belly means I did my job right.
