Not enough people mention Donella Meadows when bringing up theory, which I think is a missed opportunity. Systems thinking is very complementary to socialist theory, and Meadows’ book Thinking in Systems is quite approachable. It’s a good recommendation for someone who wants to learn more but still has some liberal brain worms.
Being approachable, and not strictly political is definitely a huge plus for being able to recommend it to regular people.
