    Those who can’t, teach

That’s something really ignorant people say. Teaching is about managing and forming personal relationships with large, diverse groups, way more than it’s about the subject of the class. If you’ve ever had a class taught by an alternative certification monkey who won’t shut up about their 15 years of industry experience, you know what I’m talking about.

the phrase doesn’t mean all teachers are incapable. it means that people who can’t do a thing have a tendency to teach it instead as a way to remain involved

similar to a “not all x are y, but all y are x” situation

it can be used that way, yes. it doesn’t exclusively mean that.

You can only use it in a self-deprecating manner if you are yourself an educator, in which case, you’re still minimizing educators.

nope, because there’s nothing wrong with tongue in cheek jokes about teaching something because you can no longer perform it at a high level

I guess my 16 years of experience in education made me ignorant towards educators? Lol I stand by my statement. I take it you’re particularly biased, either as an educator yourself, or very close to one.
