My friend is kind of set on Ubuntu studio for music produciton. Should I talk them out of it ? I dont care for Ubuntu because of their practices.

Sometimes you lose the battle to win the war. Not a big deal big deal in the grand scheme of things anyways.

I don’t like Ubuntu for similar reasons, but if that what it takes for someone to dip their toes into the Linux pool, then so be it. It’s still Debian under the hood.

This. Don’t set up barriers for them based on your personal politics. (I’m not a huge fan of Canonical, but I respect what they’ve done for Linux adoption with newcomers).

You’re right in that any distro/flavour will run the suite being marketed as Studio, but it’s almost certain your friend will expand their horizon once they spend some time using it.

Naah, let them. People use Ubuntu Studio with success to run their audio software. What is more important: you disliking Canonical, or them being able to run the software they need?

That same software can equally well run on anything else, but sure - it’s not like I care what distro the guy runs either. Maybe snaps and apt will piss him off, maybe he’ll be perfectly happy, but that’s for him to figure out either way.

People use Ubuntu Studio with success to run their audio software.

People use 100 different distros with success as well.

What is more important: you disliking Canonical, or them being able to run the software they need?

It’s a false dichotomy. Use something else and everyone is happy, has a better experience, and no one contributes to the enshittification of the Linux ecosystem.

Ubuntu Studio, I heard, is actually good for music production, and so is Fedora Jam. There are others like AV Linux (a fork of MX), depending on security needs. I personally use CachyOS for a lot, including music production, but I set it up myself anyway.

Then don’t use Ubuntu yourself. You can’t control what your friend does.

Most you can do is tell them why you don’t use it if they’re willing to listen, but if they don’t mind the reasons you give, let them be.

What practices? I don’t care for Ubuntu because I don’t particularly like the distro. I’m an old Debian fart.

I think it’ll be fine. I use bitwig in kde neon, and it works fine. I can’t imagine Ubuntu studio is going to be that crazy different.

Whatever distro they go with, be sure that it has pipewire out of the box rather than pulseaudio. Pulse is garbage and unusable for anything requiring low latency. Also make sure they know that they need to become incredibly familiar with their DAWs built in tools, since native VST compatibility with Linux is not very common.

I think Ubuntu runs like ass on anything I’ve put it on tbh, its one of my least favorite distros. But to each their own, if they are dead set on it there isnt much harm in letting them try.

Let your friend make their choices, Ubuntu is fairly solid as a distro (one that I always seem to come back to)…I would only interfere if they actually wanted to use Windows for Music Production. Given how much of a dumpster fire, Windows 11 is at the moment; I wouldn’t let a friend use it without at least warning them about the potential risks of using a Microsoft made OS.
