Highly inflammatory clickbait title IMO
allowing employers to intercept and archive RCS chats on work-managed devices.
Never put anything private on your work devices
Exactly. I’m shocked it wasn’t already a thing. I assume there is no privacy on a work device.
This RCA message archiving feature is on “fully managed” Pixel devices, which are COBO: corporate owned, business only. You shouldn’t be doing anything personal on such devices.
There’s also “work profile” which is a different kind of management for mixed personal and work use. With work profile, the admin has no visibility into the personal side of the device.
It’s simplest and safest to follow what you wrote and never bring personal and work anywhere near each other. But there’s downsides to that, like having to carry two phones. I think there’s some situations where most people will feel safe doing personal things on a work device.
How does it keep being news to people that everything on your work devices is visible to your employer?
If it is something that…
- You don’t want your employer seeing
- Could be used against you in some way
- You want to keep even if you left your current job … then don’t have it on your work device(s). Period.
Absolutely misleading headline to the point of irresponsibility. No love for Google but if you’re expecting privacy from a corporate issued and managed device then you are a fool.
Additionally, never let your work devices connect to your home network. Always set up a secondary business network, that is configured to be isolated and not allowed to communicate with other local devices, except whitelisted ones like printers.
Why?
Isolation ensures they can’t intentionally or inadvertently gather metrics on your trusted home network, connected personal devices, or activities.
Gross.
Hmm. I wonder if “work profile” functionality like what the “Shelter” app provides might mitigate that.
