plot twist, when they arrive, they are apes as well - initially we think they are in on the joke, until they proceed eating peoples faces and going complete apeshit

They had Data in the '80s. Star Trek TNG started in 1987.

Of course, they also had Lore. (And Moriarty, for that matter.)

What exactly makes this stand out as AI to you, and not just cosplay?

I can’t really find any of the telltale signs of AI. The books on the shelf all look fine, the mirror on the left edge looks perfect and I can’t find anything immediately noticeable on the costume.

If this is AI, I think it’s probably just the face, maybe the whole person, but certainly not the whole picture. But maybe I missed something, please let me know.

First thing that stands out is the lighting. He appears to be lit by a studio soft box but the rest of the room isn’t. A lot of AI “photos” do this.

Second is the texture of the face has a plasticky appearance of AI smoothing. His eyes are also blurry in a way that doesn’t make sense with the wide depth of field in the image.

It is otherwise pretty convincing. Its possible that its simply been run through some sore of AI enhancement filter, rather than being completely generated. Possibly an original selfie that someone prompted to generate an ape costume onto.

Probably just a photo edit with Gemini. Leaves the background intact, just edits the person. Much harder to find problems with these.

Look at the shadows of the right curtain, the bookshelf, and the bottles on top of the bookshelf.
And tell me where the lights are.

Also, name all objects on the top 3 bookshelves, and what lays on top of the magazines on the table.
And who the fuck has a full size mirror in the living room to watch themselves while they sit on their couch?

May I ask what makes you think this is an AI image? I’ve looked pretty closely for all the usual telltale signs, and it just looks like a picture of some really good cosplay as far as I can tell.

the belt is impossible–look at the buckle and how the belt feeds into it. also look at the right “suspender” which apparently serves no purpose other than to hold up his beer gut (and the buckle also makes no sense). also look at the amorphous mess on the second from top bookshelf–wtf even is a single item on there? also look at the shadow cast by the curtains-- doesn’t match the curtains. also look at the rug-- the patterns don’t make sense, same as the patterns on the upholstery. also, the mirror itself-- how many reverse bevel mirrors have you ever seen? speaking of curtains, it’s weird to me that the top of the curtains are flush with the curtain rod, because usually the very top of a curtain will extend above the rod.

i could be wrong about every single one of those things, but i’m betting it’s AI slop

No, you have a keen eye. I didn’t notice that it’s AI, but you’re right.
Especially the shadows don’t match the light at all.
The bottles on top of the bookshelf throw shadows to the right, but for that there would have to be a light much stronger than the visible one just off the left edge of the pic. But a light there would erase the shadow left of the bookshelf completely.

the AI assumed that a planet of the apes fan would naturally also have an excessive number of framed photos and doilies on their end tables. because that’s how old people do
