After a lengthy preview period, Microsoft’s Xbox Mode has landed on all Windows 11 PCs.
Sounds like trying to compete with Steam’s Big Picture Mode.
It would take an incomprehensible set of changes for me to consider going back to Microsoft. They can fuck off.
At this point I’m a real believer in the free and open source software model, so there’s very little Microsoft can do to bring me back to Windows other than turning Windows into an open source desktop environment running on top of Linux.
…and even then I probably wouldn’t use it over Gnome or Plasma.
So they’re real real eager to beat the Steam Frame. Good. They see it as a real competitor.
Personally I have a Bazzite box and honestly? Couldn’t be happier. Haven’t ran into a single game that doesn’t work on it. Dragon Age Inquisition was a pain (setting it up from the Origin store instead of Steam, then getting the controller to work), but other than that it’s been great.

Just yesterday I was watching a video about the claim by Microsoft to lighten and revamp Win 11, to make it snappier and close to SteamOS in gaming (lol). Honestly I’m very skeptic, I feel they’d need to almost start from scratch instead of a makeover to get rid of years and years of bandaids.

On the one hand, who cares?
On the other, maybe it motivates Valve and Steam to be even better?
Competition, even if we hate the competition, is good. This absolutely will keep Valve on their toes, investing in Proton, making BigPicture a true reality. One big thing I see happening soon is other media apps. Microsoft will undoubtedly have the Netflix/Disney/Paramount/Whatever apps that you’ll be able to launch, it’d be nice to get those on Steam/Linux as well. That’s the last thing really holding back my machine in terms of “wife approval”
I have an Ally an have had this for a bit and it really does make a difference battery life wise.
