I’m underweight because of health reasons. Lost 10 kilo (45 kilo 163cm now) about 6 years ago because the doctors decided I have an eating disorder and therefore it took months for them to realize I actually had a raging gastritis.
My digestive system never properly healed and I have a hard time gaining even a little weight. It’s exhausting, and I’m often sad since I still have a lot of clothes that just don’t fit anymore and I don’t like the way my body looks.
That’s why eating until I feel like I have to throw up has become more common but still no luck. And just a few stressful days are enough to lose half my progress again…
All help I get from doctors can be boiled down to: just try harder and eat more. It’s not that easy.
from my personal experience, i’ve had difficulty eating for a long time as well. (swallowing disorder. some kind of psychological stuff). anyways, what i’ve found was that drinking milk is a good and easy way to gain calories if you can’t eat solid food.
I’m sorry. It wasn’t my intention to shame you. I hope you can heal
Don’t worry! I know your intention was good and right. It was just meant to show you that even these things have nuance and that they usually look easier from the outside.
Even eating disorders are usually more than just “oh I want to be thin”.
If you need to just pound calories as per the “professional” doc’s advice of ‘skill issue. Just eat, what are you, suffering from a painful digestive issue or something smhmyhead’ I may have a solution
DIY soylent; super simple thing, if you’ve got a decent blender and access to flour, honey, butter/oil that’s not canola or engine, and a health foods shop or pharmacy that sells supplements, you can pretty much make your entire day’s calories into a drink and any extra food you manage to eat is a bonus.

I know the feeling, unfortunately managed to trick my brain into a state of “don’t eat” until I started getting physically ill, but having something to just sip away at means you don’t overload your stomach and can trick your body into absorbing nutrients anyway.
btw this might not work for everyone. i for example can’t drink soy milk / certain soy products. some kind of allergy i think? anyways, fermented / cooked soy products are fine, so fried meat-replacement soy stuff is good and dark fermented soy sauce too.
Same for soups. When I had that spinal tap go wrong last year and the headache felt like I’m about to die, soup was my savior :D
Luckily soylent that you make yourself doesn’t contain any actual soy, can’t speak for any of the store bought ones, but think its more of a brand name rather than being descriptive of the contents
The canola or engine comment made me cackle first thing this morning. Thank you internet stranger
before i came out to myself i had a couple tries at body building, so i learned a bit about techniques for bulking. one of the more, lets say aggressive, options for a very dirty bulk is to get calories via liquids. stuff like sugary soda and milk shakes, but i think they also have meal replacement shakes that also have a bunch of protein and fat so its not all empty calories. its much easier to get a lot of calories that way which is why the first thing they recommend people cut out for weight loss is liquid calories, because it doesnt feel like youre eating anything but youre getting a ton of extra calories. like one milkshake could have 1400 calories, but it doesnt feel like you ate anything so you also eat a full meal on top of it.
im curious if you’ve tried that and how it went. im not sure its something a doctor would learn or tell you so figured id mention.
I can’t digest fructose anymore. Most of those shakes give me violent diarrhea because they use cheap sugar or substitutes that include sugar alcohols and I’m losing more than gaining.
I then went ahead and made my own by buying maltodextrose and mixing it in my other food or making shakes when I felt too nauseous to eat. But no luck.
The biggest issue is that I rarely see the upper end of the Bristol stool chart. My body isn’t properly digesting anymore. I also have a lot of malnutrition issues (vitamins D3, B12, folate, iron, biotin, potassium, …) that again fuck up your digestive system. Leaky gut is obviously a problem too.
Then I have other issues that cause fatigue and make me very easily affected by stress. The best fix would be to not work for a few months, get my micro biome back on track and gain weight. But I can’t afford that for the next years so I have to keep going.
dam… that sounds like a really complicated issue for sure. hope youre able to get through it at some point 🫂
I’m not alone and that makes it easier most of the times. Things could be a lot worse and though I sometimes feel like it, I’m not willing to give up. One day I will grow out of my current wardrobe and it will be a great day :D
