At this point they should build a second floor in the Costco to save some horizontal space

I thought that was the joke. I saw Costco, in a news story, was building 2 stories where the top is Residential zoning. This is the internet so it could’ve been fake but it sounded like a good idea to have mixed housing. My apartment would only have Kirkland products if I didn’t have to go anywhere

They’ll need a public transport system. Not for anything as un-American as bringing the carless to Costco, but for the motorists who lucked out and had to park in the outer reaches of the car park.

A public-option retail store sounds awesome actually. Imagine all the basic necessities produced and sold at cost: staple foods, simple clothes, basic housewares, etc.

Woah you do have a point actually. Although afaik, being commodities, the margins in those markets are already quite small as is

Even slim margins add up, and basic commodity retail is borderline rent-seeking. Stocking soap because people buy soap isn’t really adding any value.

Stocking fancy soaps, scented soaps, extra delicate soaps, soaps with fun designs, etc. adds some value either through the production of differentiated products or through deliberately curating a selection of differentiated products. But just selling regular soap isn’t really a problem suited for the greater market.
