Tankies keep posting “NATO-backed Zionists” on the comm. It’s completely delusional because China, Russia, India, etc. all support Zionism as well. I was banned for pointing this out. I knew I was going against tankie narratives so I’m not surprised. It’s still pretty pathetic. Tankies literally value their alt-empire over actual meaningful anti-zionism.

FWIW I’m not especially anti-tankie either. I consider them the same as libs. People who are def better than fash but not necessarily allies.

Edit: While I’m complaining… It’s worth pointing out that the palestine comm at lemmy.ml is basically spam. There’s people distracting with their NATO/Russia politricks. There’s people reposting slop from X. I mean what is this post? I’m ok with fundraising if it’s actually overt but this is absurd. I should have switched to dbzer0 long ago.

I’m always kinda torn when someone on .ml pulls that kind of excessive cherry picking. It’s absolutely bullshit, and it meets the casual definition of power tripping via artificially and arbitrarily curating an echo chamber, with bans being a symptom of that rather than their own separate piece of trippin

    So, yeah, PTB.

But, I think anyone going there for much of anything should know at this point that it’s inevitable. Any mention of politics that don’t support the echo are going to eventually get banned, be it temporary or permanent. Going to a community that’s based around a particularly hot button subject/location and not toeing the groupthink line, well, what would anyone expect? It’s almost asking for it. It approaches baiting. It isn’t there only by virtue of how absurdly thin skinned the reactions are, but anyone doing it has to know that a ban is incoming at some point.

Yeah, when I do end up on ml or similar I very well know what I’m getting myself into, since I am disrupting an echo chamber. I’ve been banned twice, IIRC, but I didn’t even remotely bother posting it here because I know that it’s power tripping, it’s not even a question. If anything, it provides some fun for tankiejerk or meanwhileongrad.

I don’t like the echo chember argument. For example ukraine sub will rightfully remove anything from tankis regarding the war of agression russia started.

Why though? What’s the benefit of this?

Tankies are mostly wrong about everything but occasionally they make a good point. These ideological bannings are pointless and create harmful echo chambers.

I’m OK with it if you’re creating a highly curated space where only sourced, factual information is permitted but that requires a lot of work and I’ve never seen it done on Lemmy.

You don’t need to be so knowledgeable or do long research to know that Russia is the agressor

Obviously but I guess I’m just saying people are wrong about a lot of things a lot of the time and I think a ban is a really excessive response to that.

The connection is the idea of echo chambers . Just because certain views are not allowed it doesn’t it necessarly an echo chembers. One example is the ukraine sub it will not allow russian propaganda

So you went on a tangent. Fair enough.

But I wasn’t speaking in general, I am aware that curation and moderation are useful things. If you’ll go back, my initial comment led off with a sentence that specified .ml.

They create echo chambers on a regular basis, and do so using methodology that falls under “power trippin”.

But, back to your tangent about general echo chambers. I would partially agree with you. It is necessary to play gatekeeper when you moderate any community. Part of that is minimizing conflict. Since some communities are going to draw extra heat by virtue of being a hot topic, a moderator may have to deploy aggressive filtering, to the point of outright rejection of some types of comments.

That may or may not result in an echo chamber. But it can, and does if the moderator isn’t very judicious in their application of that tool set
