You guys should have stopped using American tech so the billionaires wouldn’t buy legislation against everyone else’s interest. Bet you’re still using it. If so, fuck off.
I don’t think most Americans realize just how much damage has been done to America’s reputation, internationally.
I’ve been to the US a lot, traveled the country. Spent god only knows how much money shopping there and online from US based companies. Heck, I’ve even imported cars from the US.
I can’t see myself doing any of those things, can I avoid it, any time soon. I realize I’m probably not in any sort of majority, feeling this way, but I’m not alone, either.
I think we’re mostly aware, because it’s the same in our own country. I was a patriotic teen that grew up in a military family, and I remember celebrating the Bicentennial in 1976, and I looked forward to seeing the 250th Birthday.
Yet when it hit this summer, I couldn’t have been less enthusiastic. I didn’t bother to go see any fireworks, and the day passed without much notice. It wasn’t just me, nobody seemed too thrilled about the 250th, and most of the celebration I saw seemed forced and awkward. Nobody is thrilled about MAGA America these days.
I live in a major tourist city, and own a business that tangentially relies on tourists, and even I’m telling foreigners to stay away. If I were from another country, especially if I looked anything other than pure Caucasian, you couldn’t pay me to visit America right now.
True but the only reason Canada didn’t go with the exact same choice with Poilievre was we elected Trump and Canada panicked and U-turned politically so right back at you Canada, you should be thanking the US for providing a stark enough warning to Canada not to elect Poilievre.
Y’all are just as capable of the same bigotry and violence and Carney only increases the explosive nature of fascist blowback coming for Canada domestically by being such a vapid, useless/clueless, technocratic status quo maintaining leader the same way Biden did.
Is Canada superior in this aspect or did the US just beat Canada in the race to launch off the cliff of fascism?
The impact of Trump’s ‘51st state’ rhetoric, along with his oscillating tariff threats, can be seen in the [below] chart showing popular support for various Canadian political parties. During the last week of January, support for the Liberals began to rise rapidly. For the Trudeau government, Trump’s words and behavior triggered a rally around the flag effect of epic proportions. An upsurge in Canadian nationalism—or patriotism, if you will—swept millions of voters into rethinking their partisan commitments. As unpopular as Trudeau was, he spoke for many Canadians when he concluded that the country’s very independence was on the line. Moreover, having announced that he would step down as party leader, the Liberals were free to look elsewhere.

Opinion polls at the start of the year had the Conservatives over 20 percentage points ahead of the Liberals. But after the resignation of former Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the arrival of new PM Mark Carney, as well as the tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump, that lead evaporated.
“Right now, we have a steep curve in favour of the Liberals, the steepest I have seen in my years covering the polls in Canada,” said Philippe Fournier, an analyst with 338Canada.com (new window).
An Abacus Data poll conducted between Feb. 20 and 25 still has the Conservatives ahead by 12 points. But it also shows a fairly quick upswing for the Liberals — a nine-point jump from where the party was a month ago.
Fournier said the rapid gains the Liberals have made can be attributed to three factors: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announcing he would be stepping down, interest in the party’s leadership race and the return of U.S. President Donald Trump.
The Liberal resurgence seems to be driven by three factors. First, Justin Trudeau’s resignation produced a modest but noticeable boost to the party’s standing. Second, the extensive media coverage of the Liberal leadership race accelerated this rise. Finally, the cavalcade of radical announcements from the freshly inaugurated Donald Trump has spurred a renewed sense of national identity, prompting Canadians to rally around their incumbent leaders in a show of solidarity.
Thanks largely due to Trump’s threats to make Canada a 51st state, Liberals performed even better in the election. Defying the odds, newly minted Prime Minister Mark Carney led the Liberals back from what seemed like certain defeat, assisted by the emergence of a far more more belligerent United States following Trump’s return.
“We are over the shock of the American betrayal, but we should never forget the lessons,” he said.
“As I’ve been warning for months, America wants our land, our resources, our water, our country,” Carney added. “These are not idle threats. President Trump is trying to break us so America can own us. That will never … ever happen. But we also must recognize the reality that our world has fundamentally changed.”
Poilievre hoped to make the election a referendum on former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whose popularity declined toward the end of his decade in power as food and housing prices rose.
But Trump attacked, Trudeau resigned and Carney, a two-time central banker, became the Liberal Party’s leader and prime minister.
That’s the secret to Poilievre’s previous success in polls and surveys. It wasn’t simply because Justin Trudeau was prime minister and Canadians wanted to get rid of him, although that helped. It was more related to Poilievre’s ability to imagine a Conservative version of Canada that was more viable and tangible than the Liberal version that Trudeau and later Mark Carney peddled. Non-traditional Conservative voters, including blue collar workers, young people, women and independents, gravitated towards it. If U.S. President Donald Trump and his tariff battle had never materialized, Poilievre would be prime minister today.
Hence, Poilievre needs to fight the battle for the imagination of Canadian voters once more. He should focus on rebuilding Canada-U.S. relations, emphasizing border security, supporting trade liberalization and healthier free markets, expressing clear support for Israel, and critiquing the rise of North American-style socialism in New York City (Zohran Mamdani) and Seattle (Katie Wilson). He should take the lead on issues that will likely become significant matters, including: protecting free speech, monitoring the growth of artificial intelligence, supporting enhanced market choice for telecommunications, ending supply management for the dairy industry — and more.
We know what ultimately happened. Within a month of US president Donald Trump’s election and his trade war on Canada, the massive Conservative lead disintegrated and the party went into free fall. In my estimation, that result was less a verdict on Poilievre than the outcome of a political storm that no one could contain. The objectivity of the Canadian electorate had largely been trumped—and Trumped—by the subjective analysis of one specific issue: the tariff battle.
The skills Poilievre used to surge in the polls can help him surge again. Appealing to “red meat” conservatives and the party faithful is important, but building a far-reaching political movement in a country that’s voted Liberal for nearly 60 percent of its history is extraordinary. It’s how you survive in politics—and thrive in a challenging political environment.
The most controversial statement of the federal election so far was uttered before the campaign even started — not by a federal politician, but the premier of Alberta.
In an interview taped on March 8 with a right-wing American media outlet, Danielle Smith said that, while there would always be disagreements, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre would be “very much in sync with … the new direction in America” and that Canada and the United States would “have a great relationship” for as long as Poilievre and Donald Trump were in office.
“If we do have Pierre as our prime minister, then I think there’s a number of things that we could do together,” Smith said. “Pierre believes in development, he believes in low-cost energy, he believes that we need to have low taxes, doesn’t believe in any of the woke stuff that we’ve seen taking over our politics for the last five years.”
Liberals have, for months, been trying to link Poilievre and Trump, either substantively or stylistically — Chrystia Freeland, for instance, used the term “maple syrup MAGA” to describe the Conservatives last fall. And so Smith’s comments — which only came to wider attention last weekend — were a gift to the governing party.
I am definitely worried about this. I’m doing what I can within my social circle to inform people who would vote conservative, and challenging claims/comments made in public and on social media.
the NDP really needs to get a foothold, because I don’t think (and I hope) people who voted liberal won’t do it again. we don’t need another conservative-in-disguise government
Make memes. Nobody cares about information. Make funny shit. Create groups. Fuck them. The left need to get a set of big ol titties and start throwing them around. MAGA has already placed their chess pieces for the next election. Check out all the Facebook groups like the Trans hating bobs burger group or the gay hating star trek group.
Informing people gently about topics can only happen now by seizing a popular thing then using that group to post about your issues and gain more people. It’ll weigh the algorithms to your cause because it associates popular topics with other things.
It’s a numbers game, not information. It is a network problem. Not a data problem. Whip out those big leftist tits and let’s get some attention. Fuck the lefty spinster holding us back.
That graph is really interesting. What I see is all the NDP voters abandoning its party to vote Liberal, and a portion of Conservative voters doing the same.
I’ve said it before, I think NDP voters should have stuck with NDP til the end. Would could have had a minority government with a strong NDP influence like we had under Trudeau. Even of the Conservatives were the leaders of the parliament, they wouldn’t have been able to do anything without making important deals with the Liberals and NDP.
I mean the NDP were able to get some good stuff across like free dental care, pharamacare, etc. The liberals took credit for it, but it was all NDP.
you should be thanking the US for providing a stark enough warning to Canada not to elect Poilievre.
Yeah… your government said something similar to Zelenskyy so forgive me if I find that a laughable if not downright stupid notion. While it’s true that Trump’s second election had an important role in enabling the Liberal party to maintain their majority, to even suggest that it was the sole reason is just insulting.
The US has nothing to do with the actual function of the Canadian election process, that being citizens voting of their own will. Included with that is the fact that the Liberals also wouldn’t have won if the election process hadn’t been started in the first place, as you literally quoted, by Trudeau resigning independently of any US-caused factors. There’s nothing to thank any of you for, especially with the way things are with your hellscape of a country and how it’s treating us. You can infer where to shove it.
Been yelling from the rooftops that if Canada isn’t careful it will slide into the same political trap, I mean the liberals we got are at best center right on average but Pollivre would be much MUCH worse so it’s the choice we have
Canada is superior. No question. We are just as capable of violence and fascism, true, but the difference is we choose not to go down those roads in the modern age.
We need to be careful not to take for granted that the fascism won’t happen. If we take fir granted that the fascists can’t possibly gain power, they will. I think that’s part of how Trump won, people didn’t bother voting cause they took fir granted that he couldn’t win
Yeah we’ll see about that. With the rise of white supremacist neo-nazi groups in Canada and white nationalism in general, I think Canada is just as capable to choose that road as any other country.
It’s not on the rise as it’s always been around. The members are just bolder and louder now, and I’ll wager that’s a result of the proliferation of racist ICE arrests they see south of the border. These people still have no power and are still impotent at best.
You can look at it that way, out you can look at it like this: Canada recognized that it could go down that path and so one of our political parties presented a solution so we didn’t have to.
Our former PM chose to resign as he understood he was so disliked that our conservatives would win. When has an American politician put aside their personal aspirations for the good of their country?
Canada would have made precisely the same choice of stepping on a rake and slamming themselves in the face with stupid conservative politics if the US hadn’t done it first and demonstrated how dumb of a choice it is.
Conservatives gained 25 seats and got over 2M more votes in 2025 from 2021. The reason the Liberals held onto a minority government is thanks to voters abandoning the NDP and Greens. Unless Carney starts delivering on the environment and for workers, I doubt he’ll be able to retain those voters in another election.
A lot of the NDP voters I know both voted Liberal this election and regret doing that. The best part of this seems to be that the NDP seems to have woken up and started to be a party again.
You want a thank-you card for being so noble in addition to always being exceptional? If you need any more emotional support, just let a Canadian know.
No, fuck the US I am making this point to highlight how vulnerable Canada is to the same fascist collapse especially with Carney in charge who is just as damning for the resistance against fascism as Biden was.
the only reason Canada didn’t go with the exact same choice with Poilievre was we elected Trump and Canada panicked and U-turned politically so right back at you Canada, you should be thanking the US for providing a stark enough warning to Canada not to elect Poilievre.
Nope, most Canadians do not support scumbag Pierre Poilievre. Majority seats do not equal majority support in vote share, first-past-the-post distorts reality.
Honestly, if it actual voters mattered and the number of soldiers and what individuals could do mattered, Canada could just easily accept defectors from the US. No American is going to raise arms against neighbors to the North. Every other American would hate that person.
You guys should’ve done more before Trump’s second return to power.
You guys should have stopped using American tech so the billionaires wouldn’t buy legislation against everyone else’s interest. Bet you’re still using it. If so, fuck off.
I told people til blue in the face to stop.
I don’t think most Americans realize just how much damage has been done to America’s reputation, internationally.

We’re not special.

Only AFTER the US chose the option Canada was literally just about to pick and Canada changed their mind at the last second.
Fuck the US but don’t act like Canada’s shit smells any better, it will lead Canada to ruin to believe that.
You can look at it that way, out you can look at it like this: Canada recognized that it could go down that path and so one of our political parties presented a solution so we didn’t have to.

Still sure out shit smells as bad as yours?
Canada would have made precisely the same choice of stepping on a rake and slamming themselves in the face with stupid conservative politics if the US hadn’t done it first and demonstrated how dumb of a choice it is.
Pierre Poilievre only got 41% of the vote in the 2025 federal election. The reality does not match your personal narrative.
Conservatives gained 25 seats and got over 2M more votes in 2025 from 2021. The reason the Liberals held onto a minority government is thanks to voters abandoning the NDP and Greens. “Only”?
Again Pierre Poilievre did not ever breach past 50% in vote share.
Stop acting high and mighty Americans.
You want a thank-you card for being so noble in addition to always being exceptional? If you need any more emotional support, just let a Canadian know.

Nope, most Canadians do not support scumbag Pierre Poilievre. Majority seats do not equal majority support in vote share, first-past-the-post distorts reality.
Canadians are more complex than our government.
The same goes for the US
How about you back up your claims with data and sources like I did?
A neoliberal sense that “oh we are above that here” places Canada in existential danger.
Honestly, if it actual voters mattered and the number of soldiers and what individuals could do mattered, Canada could just easily accept defectors from the US. No American is going to raise arms against neighbors to the North. Every other American would hate that person.
