The more I see of Gal Gadot the more I sympathize with Rachel Zegler having to work with her. It still doesn’t excuse Snow White or her annoying interviews, but still.

I don’t like the AI tide either, but this isn’t entirely out of line.
The argument against it is that one should always use practical effects. Okay, I get that. But what about movies like Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Space Jam, which incorporated live-action actors into cartoon worlds? Should that not be allowed?
Then the argument becomes “well that’s fine if it’s hand drawn.” Okay, but you have a lot of anime and western animation where computer generated imagery (or CGI) was used for complex movement. It still requires human hands, but AI just kinda speeds that up a bit.
I don’t think movies shot with practical effects are going anywhere. Drama is my favourite genre of film, and that requires no AI. But for sci-fi and fantasy, I think you can get away with it here and there.
Who Framed Roger Rabbit is kinda an insane example to use here, most of that movie is actually practical effects. If you’ve never looked at a behind the scenes, I’d really recommend it, because some of the contraptions they constructed to have some of the shots done all in camera are truly one of a kind.
Yeah, I had no idea, so, my bad. But I mean — you’ve got your all-film, no animation, no CGI, no AI movie. Then for a step up, you have some practical effects with some really brilliant trickery. I’d say like the first Star Wars, or, I suppose, Who Framed Roger Rabbit if that indeed applies. Then of course you have Disney and Japanese animated films, and CGI stuff like Toy Story and Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within… and, I suppose, eventually we’ll have more AI in movies.
I don’t like it either, but I feel like it’s inevitable. I do not count myself among the ones who support this future or will go out to see these movies.
I also remember how Bruce Lee was killed doing stunts, and then so was his son Brandon. If one day we can say “stunt performers used to die but don’t anymore because we changed the way we do special effects,” that would be a good thing, albeit with tradeoffs. I’m not trying to strawman here. I’m just a guy who likes movies. And while I do like some animation (mostly, from Japan — and it feels like they’ll be on the forefront of this, though the big AI tech bros seem to be American or European), my favourite type of films are the ones with real actors. (Never mind that my all-time favourite film is animated. 君の名は。, or your name. outside Japan. I’m sure it has some CGI. Since it came out in 2016, I don’t think it was made with AI.)

So the whole art department and G&E is gone, I bet the VFX artists are still getting fucked on pay, most likely foreign production companies for tax breaks and not allowed to unionize.

I looked up Gal Gadot once to figure out what her background was.
She was in a hotgirl magazine (maybe Maxim?)
She made some appearances on an Israeli soap opera.
And then someone cast her in a Fast & Furious movie on the basis of that… very limited resume. Then she had Wonder Woman and some other shit, I don’t remember. And even her fans admit her acting is garbage.
Like, this is the most fast-tracked-to-A-lister I think I’ve ever seen in my life. Someone very powerful hooked her up because there’s literally no other way to make that happen, unless you’re the child of someone who is already famous (e.g. Scott Eastwood, who was also fast-tracked via a Fast & Furious movie).
A-listers are very valuable to film producers. Creating an A-lister usually takes time and a whole lot of financial investment. Producers have to be convinced that an actor can pull in the numbers at the box office, as they do NOT like taking risks with their money. If they take a risk on an A-lister and that actor don’t resonate with audiences, that’s a lot of money gone with little to show for it.
Someone really wanted her, and specifically her, to become A-list famous, and they wanted it bad enough to risk a massive financial loss if she wasn’t able to sell tickets.
Maybe it’s just me but she’s not a great actor.

I understand tolerating it, but buying into this "you’re going to be left behind* narrative is just ridiculous. AI is NOT there yet. And it has so many objectionable downsides with the way it works right now.

As someone who is actually anti-AI, I have yet to find a single task I would need to use AI for, and have been able to strip it out of most of my daily life. With how easy it’s been, I can’t trust these “afraid of AI but using it” types at all.
I’m on the same page as you. Many of my colleagues in academia uses LLMs daily. Honestly, I haven’t found a task that I couldn’t do without it. They drank the kool-aid, I guess.
