Who remembers Broderbund Print Shop and the bad fonts it unleashed upon the world?
I kinda remember making banners with the z-fold dot matrix printer paper, but mosty I remember MS-Word’s WordArt, which I think is the BomDia here.
Nowadays, the desktop publishing situation is grim. MS Publisher is being retired soon, pushing people to shitty online template-based solutions.
I’m surprised MS Publisher is still around to be honest. I haven’t heard about it in about two decades.
Canva is the worst thing to happen in a long time and everybody is using it. I have to do docs at work sometimes, I ended up building html templates and have a script that prints it out into a neat looking PDF. All that just so I could avoid another bloated cumbersome web app where you have to pay for the simplest of things. I dream of the day that company fails and burns to the ground.
Affinity is pretty good and free. Belongs to one of the pushers of shitty online templates these days, though.
Just a matter of time before it’s gone or enshittified, given its owner. Make sure to keep it backed up in a way that you can reinstall it without any server authentication, and I’d also freeze automatic updates/
I currently have it running in a Windows VM not connected to the Internet, so that should be fine. I also think that they are using it as a sales funnel towards their premium subscription, which of course might mean that more and more features get locked behind that.
Currently it’s just the AI Features and Templates, which doesn’t affect me as a user.
Companies can and do issue updates that bricks your device until you pay them, ie ransom. You’re at even greater risk with software.
