In other news, Iran is at war with America and its stooges following a failed coup attempt by America and its stooges.

When you look at videos of Iran, the headscarf laws are clearly not enforced at all. So I am betting this woman did something different than just not wearing a headscarf like criticizing the government

A fine? Does the religion carve out exceptions in exchange for money, or do they just disregard the religion in exchange for money?

Either way, it might be interesting if she can (SAFELY) keep doing it at every show and the budget can cover the fines as a business expense. Maybe she could help normalize it a bit. (I assume that would be a good thing, but I admit that I’m pretty ignorant on the topic.)

She could only pay the fine because she had no prior criminal record - it’s mentioned in the article.

You’re referring to this part, right?

[…] her lack of a prior criminal record made it legally possible to convert the 74 lashes into a cash fine.

Does a criminal record include cash fines in Iran, or does she continue having no criminal record?

If it’s like pretty much anywhere else, the fine simply replaces the lashes in the sentencing phase. The conviction happened long before that and is separate.

Tbf if you count Zakat, Islam does let you get away with some sin so long as you give money to people in need, tho I don’t think old men running the government are exactly “people in need.”

You think this money will go to “old men running the government”? It goes into the state’s budget like all other revenue. This complaint is like complaining speeding fines will go to old men running the government.

Whether you agree or disagree with these fines, it’s indisputable that iran still has a more functional, less corrupt government than say, Egypt or Saudi or Kuwait or Iraq or any number of regional US allies

I know it’s stupid, but I’m relieved for the girl. 74 lashes seems a little much. and of course other people have died over this and other “Islamic law”, if she had said “I’m atheist” or “I’m gay” she’d be long dead.

To me, it’s so horrible that I can’t research Iran et al for long without having to tap out

Remember, the only reason these religions nut jobs are in power is because the UK and US overthrow Iran’s secular democracy for a pro west dictator. We killed off every left thinking person while secretly training and funding right wing theological factions as a region destabilizing force.

As far as I can tell online, 100 million Iranian Rials is about $73. And there are ten toman to a rial. So maybe it’s more like $730. But I also found this on a reddit thread in /iran

Officially, 10 Rials is one Toman. But very unofficially, toman can erase as many zeros as you want based on the context. Talking about a bottle of water? 2 toman means 2000 tomans. Talking about something a bit more expensive, like a rug? 20 tomans means 20 000 000 tomans. Talking about something very very expensive like a house? 4 toman means 4 000 000 000 tomans.

Since this is a large number and it’s in the news, that probably doesn’t apply. It sounds more like street vernacular. But it tells me that I really don’t know anything about Iranian money.

      Wrong way, 10 Tomans to 1 Rial means 100,000,000 Tomans = 10,000,000 Rials = $7.30

Nevermind, I read the other comment wrong.

        Results inconclusive, further research required

Classic westoid behaviour 👌. Perving on Middle Eastern women in a thread about how the evil patriarchy in Iran subjugates women. It’s true that westoids will never be happy in life until every woman on earth ends up on pornhub. If you can’t google hot pics of ladies in your society then is your society even functional?

Your natural instinct is to perv on the woman and imply you need to see her naked to establish her hotness. And you lack the self awareness to see how your society socialized you into this monkey behaviour where every woman is an attainable piece of ass online. Like an entire society afflicted with Tinder-brain. Objectify, Commodify, rate hotness, see if porn available, move on to the next one.

        It’s:

        What * looks like
        OR
        How * looks

It’s never “how * looks like” (Replace looks with any other relevant word). Always “What like”, never “How like”.

No, Mia. The religion is 100% imperialist. What this only showed is that Iran is still a capitalist nation first, the religious hazing is only a bonus.

You don’t dethrone an empire with another. That’s what campists do.

Empire don’t discriminate. They attack “bad” countries as well as “good” countries. The simple act of defense against aggression does not automatically make someone the paragon of freedom and justice, despite what some “leftists” like to think. Imperialism is not the only “sin” a country can commit. It’s a bully being attacked by a bigger bully.

One of the few benefits of living in the country with the most devaluated coin in the world: the price of fines is generally updated more slowly than inflation and the result is that fines become peanuts
