A new division called Xbox XP will take the lead on “film and television, consumer products, strategic partnerships, and live experiences,” with a focus “on how people experience our franchises beyond the games themselves.”

Sigh…

I saw a post on blusky that summarized it: Microsoft never wanted to consolidate studios. They wanted to consolidate IP.

That was always the case. Nobody cares about workers from other companies. There is a reason why people fear for their jobs in buyouts/mergers.

Xbox now has some of the best IP in gaming.

Don’t video game sales make magnitudes more money than movies. Sounds like a another brilliant Xbox move.

Xbox now owns the following franchises, among many others: Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Warcraft, Diablo, Call of Duty, The Outer Worlds, Wolfenstein, Doom… Those are just most of the important ones from recent acquisitions. Some already have movies or TV shows, but they can always make new ones for those too.

yeah this is bullshit move. copying PlayStation, which didn’t even do great with films.

but i guess part of the reason is that since hardware prices keeping going up and up, they don’t expect many ppl to buy future consoles or handhelds.

and movies/tv don’t require audience to buy any hardware upgrades, for the most part.

I could understand doing this if your brand was thriving, but this just feels like trying to squeeze money out of a sinking business instead of fixing the problems that are sinking it.

Their C-suites are in panic and know fuck all about games but they probably have seen one or two movies and have heard of Netflix. They probably proposed this because it‘s the only thing that makes sense to them in a foreign world that confuses them. It can only fail and will likely churn out AI slop nobody wants to watch.

People making the decisions are removed from how work gets done, how users engage with the product, and any real consequences. But they keep most the profits despite contributing minimally.

They may also think Disney or Skydance will buy them and theyll get to sail out the window on their golden parachutes.

It makes sense when you realize they paid bank for a bunch of IPs over the last 5 years and want to squeeze more out of it.

This is just them looking to make codblops the movie.

Would it be possible to release episodic games like the telltale series, then take the most common choice paths and use those as the framework for the next season or something like that?

If there’s a way they can use it to tie-in with the games in a unique, sort-of-interactive experience that will drag casuals into the ecosystem from the TV shows then that has potential to be something great, and at least exciting to be a part of.

If they’re just looking to make 3 seasons of The Banjo Kazooie Show then…

“Xbox XP will be headed by Kayleen Walters, who previously spent a couple years as president of Minecraft studio Mojang and before that spent close to a decade in different brand and “franchise development” roles at Microsoft. Prior to that she spent 13 years at Lucasfilm, finishing her time there as vice president of franchise marketing and integrated planning.”

That’s disaster waiting to happen, all in that one paragraph. So you’re going to have someone spearheading this, who only knows Minecraft and Marketing. Yeah, good fucking job there, idiots. There is nothing there that speaks of being a director, a producer or even having a hand working staff behind a film. Just an annoying marketer who’s going to shove this shit down our throats. Wonderful.

The bargain bins are full of once-great brands that haven’t produced anything in decades, but will let any old cheap factory slap their name on a product for a few bucks.

This is basically the same thing, but with stories instead of hardware.
