That is why I actually love the FDN Starter Kit, 2 Pre-Made decks with a pre-nade gameplan for two to play a game which goes into basic mechanics. Then 8 more boosters which contain basic cards which mostly fit the color pie. And with the knowledge you just got from the starter game you can actually build and play decks built from these boosters. The games will be slow and boring after a while but for beginners thats ideal.
Same here. The dude “teaching” me was very skilled and used every ounce of knowledge against me in the game showing me how to play. I lost really quickly twice and he was shocked that I didn’t want to play a third time.
This is why I hate it when new people want to dive into edh immediately. I have the goblins vs merfolk duel deck specifically to teach people but they’re like “nah I have a deck” so I teach the basics best I can but also have to teach timing and the stack and also combos and synergy. Had to explain to a guy that hardened scales didn’t double static boosts.
Also evaluating an edh board requires a ton of knowledge and experience. I was at a table with some friends, 1 experienced and 2 brand new to edh. Experienced friend was in UG and was potentially combing next turn. I blew my good stuff to one shot him and the other guys were like “why you bully him.” So I’m like OK I won’t. Next game he slaps the table and they’re like “why you no stop him.” 🤷🤷🤷
i had a pretty good introduction, as one person was teaching a bunch at the same time.
we would choose some basic decks, each with only one color, and would just play against eachother, and not against people who already knew a bunch about the game
it was pretty fun at the start, but it still became really boring tho because it does just become reading, and you have to buy expensive stuff to have a chance against the others in the group who ended up more into the game than you
and they’ve got like 0 balacing too, so you just gotta learn which cards are good and which aren’t
A florid but incredibly accurate way of putting it, lol.
MTG isn’t a game for people who enjoy a fun and well-matched contest of skill. It’s for people who like to demolish their opponent and feel smug about it.
I used to keep a couple of preconstructed decks around to teach friends, those are way less powerful and not as tuned to a specific game plan, so games would be way more open and an actual game would happen.
Bro same, or even better use two evenly matched decks, but one has an advantage against the other like black vs green. Give them the deck with the advantage and let them enjoy.
I remember when we used to buy starter decks (they were 60 random cards, 1/3 of which were lands), take the wrapping off, look at the cards to get an idea, then shuffle and play.
No P2W, just pure strategy based on the cards you’re dealt.
I think my second attempt to play MTG (different group from the first time) was with precons and it still kinda sucked, 4 hours later the game was done and I’m fine not playing it.
Yeah my cousin was like that trying to teach me an my brother. Really demonstrated how unfun that game could be.
Same situation when he tried to get us to play Dnd with him and just threw a bunch of monsters at us that we couldn’t beat and then got pissed we tried to escape instead.
Literally the same thing happened to me with a cousin who convinced me to try some online version of the game. Played two games where he steamrolled me without explaining how and why everything was happening and I was like “yeah I’m good thanks”.
Funnily enough, someone else online convinced me to play the Digimon TCG on tabletop simulator with them, and it went well enough that we continued a couple times a week for months. He did a much better job of explaining every step of the game, and I was winning maybe a third of the games towards the end. Commandramons, my beloveds.
I strongly suggest you try chess again as an adult. I had the same experience, but with online resources now it’s actually a very fun experience. You also are always matched with people at your own skill level. There is basically no skill ceiling so it’s a game you can study forever.
My first experience with MTG. I never really got into it.

I had a friend that did this to my wife when we were trying to teach her.
Preconstructed decks are the way to go when teaching someone MTG. This dude decided that the best introduction was explaining how the stack worked….
Suffice to say she never touched the game again.

Exactly the same. Just sitting there waiting for him to finish his MTG masturbation so I could leave.

Limited drafts and mid-power cubes is where it is for me. Known amount of mechanics and no bombs or crazy game ending combos.
And some of them treat the game like golf, trying to play the least amount of the game.
thats a dick move.

“This is my another sliver. Since I have this sliver and this sliver out…”
I almost always lost when me and my friends were learning 60 card kitchen table magic, then I found slivers
Flashback of my dad teaching me chess when I was like 5.
My dad was the same except instead of chess it was boxing
Well that just sounds like pure abuse

This is me.
