One billion dollars can buy a fuck ton of beanie babies, hold onto them for 30 years and they would be worth millions of dollars!

Can we just discuss how the current billionaires are more interested in hurting people than enjoying life?

I ain’t saying that having a billion dollars is a bad thing, but I will say you can have a billion dollars and still be missing a piece

    Or box of pieces

I ain’t saying that having a billion dollars is a bad thing

I am, though. It ABSOLUTELY is. That much wealth concentrated on one person is extremely toxic to the psyche of the person as well as detrimental to the function of society as a whole.

Absolutely! I detest the majority of rich folks who are for some reason desperate for more profit no matter who they hurt or how badly. Like do they not have enough private jets? Is the global environment not degrading fast enough for their taste?🤦🏻‍♀️

Personally though, 1 billion dollars is my only missing piece. Aside from that I’m perfect! (and super humble)

$10 million would let me freeload forever. $100 million would achieve most things i want. $1 billion would let me solve at least one national issue and also blow the rest on whatever the fuck i/my entire family could possibly want.

That much money is a fucking hassle. Everyone wants it and bothers you about it. You can’t just leave it alone, it needs to be managed. Some portion of that money goes to pay for the management of it. And if anyone finds out you have that money, they treat you differently because generally, only shitheads and assholes have that much money. Money is fucking toxic and humanity is a giant disappointment

Almost nobody gets to $1b overnight. To get to $1b first you need to have $100m, and to get there you need $10m. Each level of that is life changing.

I’m sure that by the time you’re worth $10m your entire social circle has changed. If you’re really lucky you have old friends who have known you for decades who you can be pretty sure like you for yourself, not your money. Probably some friendships have ended after someone you thought was a friend made a request you thought was unreasonable. You have certain parts of your family who you have cut off contact with because you think they just want your money, and other parts of the family who either your money keeps in line, or who are able to keep acting normally despite the money.

To have and actually keep $10m, you can’t still be the kind of person who helps people in need and is generous to friends and family. There will always be people with debt problems, medical issues, legal problems, housing crises, etc. So, either you were never that kind of person to begin with, or your heart hardens a bit as you get richer.

I’m sure those kinds of changes keep happening, and at each level more and more people are cut off. Or, those people are kept in line by the use of the money. By the time you reach $1b, you can’t really see the average person as fully human. $1b could relieve so much suffering. You could give away 1 percent of it and not even notice, and completely transform the lives of dozens of people, hundreds if you’re talking about people in developing countries, etc.

I don’t have $10m, but I’ve found it has become easier to be more given the more I have. My foundation is safe. My bills are paid. I have some money left over. I can now much more easily look outward to see where I can help others knowing that helping others doesn’t put my own future at risk.

Right, but that’s why you (I assume) aren’t a deci-millionaire. Maybe you would be if you invested that money instead of being generous with it.

            you (I assume) aren’t a deci-millionaire.

Having $100,000 in net worth (especially as an older adult) isn’t that rare. 😀

Its those deca-millionaires that are close to (but not quite) in the 1%, and no I’m not one.

Maybe you would be if you invested that money instead of being generous with it.

For me, I’d still be well under $10m even with zero charitable contributions.

Its possible be under $10m net work and to donate/contribution tens of thousands of dollars per year without it being a meaningful hit against growth. Once you hit a certain point, the compounding of what you have does the work. This was my point.

If you started with $1m in the boring S&P500 10 years ago, that would be worth $4,446,735 today. Projecting forward, if you had $4m today with the same returns over the last year (probably unlikely after trump) you’d have $17,786,940 in 2036. Ten thousand dollars every year donated doesn’t reduce that much.

            you

I wonder if you could actually learn anything doing an experiment in an MMO or something where the money wasn’t actually real. Because, obviously, this isn’t the kind of thing that you can actually study with real money in the real world. Just imagine you could actually get approved for that kind of study… but you can’t really learn anything with a single person, or n=1, so now you need n=100…

At $1B I’d assume the person and any close family members would be at risk of kidnapping/ransom. I would imagine billionaires all have to hire and pay for private security.

It depends on how much risk you want I guess. Amounts that big aren’t covered by deposit insurance in a single account. Banks also fuck up all the time. They could give someone else access to your money without you knowing. And if you have that much money, it makes you a target. There will be tax things you have to do around that money too.

Sure, but then you still need to deal with people. And people aren’t trustworthy with money, so now you gotta worry about that too. And what kinda rubric do you even come up with for those interviews for smart people to make sure they aren’t going to just steal your money or lose it through negligence? So now you gotta think about that shit too. Ever done interviews? No thanks. Again, giant fucking hassle.

You would still be losing purchasing power due to inflation. At this scale it as long as you are not a greedy moneywhore investing it, or not would not impact a lavish and privileged lifestyle for a few generations.

If you wanted to keep your descendents wealthy for as long as possible, you park it all in a trust, have a family office manage it for you aiming for real returns of 3%, so roughly 5-6% nominal returns and descendents get whatever real returns acrue after inflation as income forever.

Just a thousandth of that would be fine with me. At this point I just want comfort and security. I’m okay where I’m at, but another million as a buffer would remove any concerns at all.
