Reasons why BSDs especially NetBSD getting more users or first time trying users.
I use Trisquel, one of the FSF approved distros. So far it seems to have held up well against a lot of the less inviting changes in the Linux space, but it is based on Ubuntu. I do wonder how much longer it will hold up until I end up making the jump to a BSD system. Not the fault of the developers, just that the flow of the base system is too strong to fight against forever.
I didn’t watch the video but I hope the Proton CEO had low blood sugar while saying this bs it is egregious.
“He did not” -The narrator
damn proton ceo sounds deranged
There are folks in the occult space that think LLM’s are possessed by evil spirits. Yeah, I know, make of that what you will.
BUT, when I see folks at the top and the way they talk about this stuff, my rational mind kind of wavers and you see people who are just completely and totally absorbed with these things. Maybe them occult folks are on to something. 🙃
Scary to see, it is like alzheimer’s disease in how it eats away at the persons autonomy below but unlike that disease, it still maintains enough cognition for them to be functional in society. For better or worse.
He is
Ubuntu trying hard to thanos SnapD themselves from existence.
Are there any good news even lately. Every day I wake up to a new CVE, the list of things in the post title isn’t encouraging either.
Serbia recently democratically ousted their fascist leadership and are in the process of replacing it with people from a curated list of teachers and professionals that students have spent the last few years compiling via open democratic debate.
They’re making a technocracy? Cool!
CVEs mean the issues are getting found and fixed instead of sitting on a three letter agency’s arsenal.
and all the end-user has to do is update.
I agree, but it does not make my job any easier trying to keep up with fixing systems that management refused to update before.
well, it’s our job. (and management can have the broken systems they wanted to, see if i care)
There’s something interesting, if not encouraging:
AlpineBSD is an operating system based on the NetBSD kernel with a userspace inspired by Alpine Linux and the objective to use as little AI-generated software as possible.
This is skeptical. NetBSD is already the most anti-AI BSD out there. They clearly ban AI-generated content (code and email). One exception is that their core team can sign off AI-generated pull requests, but so far they never did.
AlpineBSD has four tiers of exposure in their package registry so that the user can choose how tainted they want their system to be. This is less ideal if the goal is to not have slop in the system.
The tainted package repos are separated from the clean ones, akin to the way Debian handles non-libre software.
Honestly, it’s a good compromise: the base system is clean, and the rest can be cleaned up over time as alternatives and forks are created.
I’d also like to point out that it’s not strictly a proper BSD, as it often prefers GNU and BusyBox in the userspace.
What excites me most is the proof of concept here; I’m considering trying to make a Arch-like OS built on the NetBSD kernel.

There are good news too, but those doesn’t NEED to be told to everyone. A CVE is very important to get it out as fast and to many possible. But if something good happens, it doesn’t have the urgency and need to reach everyone in short possible time. Plus bad news are for most people more interesting and get you clicks too, just to add to the fuel. And Ai doesn’t help with that either.
Therefore its only natural that we see more bad news than good news.
ai company goes ai crazy, wow never saw that coming /s
Proton wasn’t an Ai company before.
lumo
but please do the denial/semantics thing just as proton fanboys always have
Sorry, I missed the “/s” (which stands for sarcasm) in your original reply. I wasn’t being toxic in anyway, just wanted clarify that Proton wasn’t an Ai company before the recent forced Ai usage, because it looked like you wouldn’t know what you talking about.

Understandable. Have a nice day.
proton fanboys
Lol that’s not a fuckin thing in the least
i have definitely seen proton fanboys.
Like 10 years ago? What qualifies? If we’re talking anything like apple fanboys I’ve seen nothing remotely like that
I think the you/techtuber community loves to ride Protons D*ck. I would call many of them fanboys.
Ok. Well the person I responded to was on Lemmy, so I thought we were talking about here. In any case I actively avoid YouTube so you may be right and I would never know
You have either been living under a rock for years, or you are deliberately delusional.
You are either lying or hanging out in weird places but sure let’s make it a character flaw of mine
your claim was “that’s not a fuckin thing in the least”, so if they exist even in “weird places”, your claim was wrong.
Your issues are your own.
Says this guy ^ lmao
Proton was involved with a racist shithead though
