You can be an introvert and have no trouble at all picking up the phone, though.

Yeah, this is actually more a social anxiety thing. Introverts are more likely to have untreated social anxiety because it self reinforces with their preference for isolation.

And the number of extroverts who suffer believing they’re an introvert because of their social anxiety …. So so so high

Totally. I’m an introvert, and when my phone rings, I pick it up with no problem. I also immediately put it down again with no problem. Works really well, except when people decide to let it ring for what feels like eternity.

This isn’t an introvert thing though. I’m the champion of introversion and can make it through a phone call no problem. Don’t ask me to call someone I don’t know though. But my point is, this is some form of anxiety. It may be more prevalent in introverts, that’s probably why we can bond over it. But its not an introvert thing to be scared of phone calls, its something else.

Zoomers are an interesting breeds. My zoomie girlfriend stresses about phone calls too. I just find it to be the quickest way to actually handle things. And much easier for me at work

I’d be more fine with messaging people if people weren’t so slow to react. Same people who get annoyed at me for calling them will ignore the message for 15 minutes or even if they’re reacting, they might just leave it as unread so I’ll be there waiting for them to answer. Infuriating.

Might be related to ADHD or something but I tend to forget things. So in emails and messages I can put all the details and also read it again later and be sure what was discussed. In person I kind of have a better feeling if everything was discussed and what the outcome was, I also remember it better. With phone calls, I have to be super careful. Take notes and if it’s really important also make a script about the topics I want to discuss…

I write the email draft, then have the call and check if I said everything while talking. The point is, I would have to write stuff down anyways.

Phone only is dangerous because a lot of info is just in your head and not anyone else’s .3 weeks later it’s gone.

I end up sending the draft+ what was discussed additionally.

Could send a message afterwards to confirm. I just often need a quick answer for stuff and that’s why I call, I don’t really mind waiting a bit if I know they’re actively looking for the answer

I’m sorry would they prefer me to take my gear off, type a message and wait at the bottom of the muddy dig with the rest of the crew for whenever they bother to reply?

          I think I prefer calling

the way you worded this sounds as though there is no justification possible for not wanting to do phone calls.

There are the more common reasons for not appreciating calls such as introversion (which you can’t easily remove as though it’s a band-aid) as well as generally being too tired or overworked to do a call at that time.

Theres also, less commonly, neurodivergent traits that make phone calls very overwhelming, such as autistic folk’s over analysis of how they may sound, what they say and the tone and other characteristics of the person on the other side, or ADHD folk’s executive dysfunction, effectively preventing ease in taking a phone call in the first place, and many other neurotypes having differing traits.

It’s not an issue of people being scared by phone calls most of the time, it can simply be apathy, inconvenience, and other aspects that prevent genuinely wanting to take a phone call.

For myself, I hate phone calls unless I’m on a commute with people I know since I know I won’t be disturbing them by calling someone else, or at times I have nothing provisioned for a specific time of day. I’m not weak willed, im not stupid, I just am neurodivergent, possibly with ADHD and autism (although not entirely sure, I don’t want to completely agree with my self diagnosis until I’m close to getting assessed).

Lastly, I don’t blame you for taking this point of view, it’s natural for many people to think this even if they have a wide perspective, it’s just better to dive into the reasons why these phenomena happen.

I’m a Gen Z but I prefer phone calls over text messages. Also, I think it depends heavily on who you arw talking to over the phone. If it’s friend or family it won’t be too scary.

It’s so common there’s clearly something wrong with phones. Maybe they’re cursed?

Over ten years ago I had to make a phone call to a foreign country to book a hotel, and my heart rate was as if I’d just sprinted somewhere

        It’s so common

It didn’t use to be. I’ve been making phone calls since I was a kid (more than 40 years ago) so no, I don’t think the phones themselves are the culprits.

They’ve definitely become worse with automation stuff like menus where you have to type a lot numbers and say stupid things for 30 minutes until you finally get a human. If you forgot to mention anything you’ll never get the same person on the phone and you have to start over…
