And the only reason you’re not banned from X is because Altman and Musk are competing for the same tech messiah title.

I bought a new laptop with 16 GB of DDR5 (8 GB soldered and 8 GB socketed) as it was super cheap for an 8840HS, and was planning to buy a 48 GB SODIMM for 120€ but held off on it for multiple reasons, thinking “it can wait and I can make do with less memory for now”

Yeah that 48 GB stick now costs 500€ which is just 50€ short of the entire laptop…

This too shall pass - we can hope that now there is both a massive revenue opportunity in the server market as well as an abandoned consumer market ripe for the taking, some enterprising manufacturer is going to look into filling this niche. Probably someone out of China, or maybe even India if they can get their shit together in time.

I saw 32GB of DDR4 RAM at best buy the other day for around 400 bucks. Which wasn’t adding up for me at all but ok

Recently upgraded my servers. 256GB ddr5 each. Was 1600 moneyz altogether. Now, not half a year later, the exact same ram is 6400 now.

I bought twice the amount by accident and sent half of it back…for which I now bit my left nut off…could’ve been a free bunch of gaming PCs.

My friend bought what he thought was 16GB ddr5 for $50, but turned out to be 10 sets for $500. Now they’re selling for about $250 each. Everything is insane!

Totally bonkers, yes. But chill! It all will relax in the near future and go down to just 200% more expensive than before. And then stay there. And we will be happy-ish.

Oof, you lucky dog. Except the last part, but that’s just the difference between being just lucky and being really fucking lucky.

Oh yeah lucky! I evened out fate, as I waited to finally buy my GPU at the absolute peak for an insanely outrageous price only to see it fall day by day since then.

So, I’m kinda at zero (dis-)advantage now 😁

I mean I would still wanna do that even if it reduced costs to like $300 for a fully spec’d dream system.

Even if it cost me $300 per hit, if stop turn him into a vegetable. That’d be the best money ever spent.

Sam Altman has nothing to do with the current RAM shortage. Moreover, this is not the first RAM shortage. It also occurred during the earlier crypto-mining boom, and at that time no one was having public meltdowns trying to hunt down the inventor of Bitcoin.

The reason there is a RAM shortage is straightforward, the manufacturers that control the majority of production have chosen to sell primarily to a single industry because that is where the highest margins currently exist. From a financial standpoint, they have little incentive to sell to anyone else.

If you are looking for accountability, direct it at the large corporations that are deliberately allocating supply to maximize profit. They are the ones shaping the shortage, not individual tech executives.

Now, who could be in charge of the company most well known for needing absurd amounts of RAM to make their product work?

Who goes around making hundred billion dollar deals to ensure their business has access to massive datacenters filled with GPUs that need 2000GB of RAM?

Whose company recently wanted to buy 40% of all RAM on the market, and got a letter of intent from major RAM producers who were willing to supply it, assuming they got paid?

Oh, right! SAM FUCKING ALTMAN! You’re right that RAM producers are currently profit-maximizing openly and nakedly, but to call him blameless would be naive and just wrong. They wouldn’t be doing so, at least not to this degree, had ChatGPT and LLMs not become the hottest new scam bubble tech industry through his actions.

Sam Altman put in an order for RAM. A company is willing to supply it. That company is souly responsible for how they distribute their product. They could only supply them with a small portion of the order and be fair about it but they choose not too. 🤷

Yes Altman is not blameless but he’s also not responsible.
