I hope they go back to basics with episodic storytelling, e.g. They go to a new planet, there’s a problem of some sort (Scientific, social, military etc), they solve the problem, everyone’s happy, then they go home.
Too many shows get bogged down in one long story line rather than exploring all the different options for smaller, self-contained stories they can tell in between. But, they did bring back a lot of the original writers, so that’s a good sign and a good start.
I really hope Amazon doesn’t “Rings of Power” this…
idk, i always found the overarching story of the shows more interesting, i think the thing that made stargate good is just when it knew that the whole concept is inherently corny.
Hence why Universe was a bit eh, they started taking themselves too seriously and forgot about the humor.It’s also why i personally enjoy Atlantis the most, because they managed to both have moments where i could forget it’s fiction at all while also having proper comedy.
SG1 had plenty of proper comedy, but i could never quite forget that it’s a TV series.
Universe meanwhile just felt like a straight up documentary, very immersive but if i wanted to see people being miserable i’d just look out the window…I think SGU put way too much focus on the inter-personal drama of the characters rather than the situational drama of what was happening around them, on top of the lack of comedic moments that you mentioned.
honestly i think it could have worked (or at least been neutral), if it weren’t for the fact that the drama was largely stupid.
Like did we really need to force in young adult romance drama? Really?? aaaaarghIt doesn’t even make sense on any level: y’all are stuck on a spaceship in the arse end of nowhere, maybe let’s not act like hormonal teenagers and focus on not dying? Maybe?
We’ve even tested this scenario IRL: A bunch of people spent months isolated on a boat and they just ended up having sex with each other and becoming close friends to the point that they were about to murder the guy who orchestrated it and tried to sow discontent, only to then sit down for a rational discussion and decide against it!
It’s such typical forced television drama, literally on the level of reality TV, which is infamous for basically none of the drama being even remotely real.The irony is that it would have made infinitely more sense in Atlantis, because they’re not in such an obvious life-or-death situation and there’s enough people in the city that everyone doesn’t know each other.
And in fact Atlantis did do the drama better, refugees and expedition staff not quite trusting each other makes sense! The minor romance stuff they did made sense, and wasn’t annoying!
They’ve got a bunch of the people who made SG1 involved, so let’s hope!
Aliens only can come from planets that are like the Pacific Northwest or California, according to my research based on Star Trek, Stargate and Battlestar Galactica
On the other hand, Dr Who would imply that some aliens have a special interest in the UK for some reason, and therefore having a base there might make some sense to deal with those ones.
Russia too. That was a recurring theme in Stargate SG-1.
Russia also has a strange resemblance to areas just outside of Vancouver.
