NGL I wish I had work to do. I appreciate that this company is willing to pay me for 8 hours of nothing, but fuck it’s boring and if layoffs happen then I’m definitely the first to go

I have times when I feel like I am doing nothing, sometimes for days, but also my higher ups all love me and think I am amazing and all I can think “WTF are my peers doing if I am somehow the best?”

Its like that Office meme where he is getting the award or whatever it is (I have not actually watched The Office really).

One time I got a “promotion” at work. I knew it was coming as I did training etc. A manager comes to me and asks to speak privately. He tells me that 1. Here is your new title and salary 2. He is retiring on Monday (this was a Wednesday).

It took about 9 months to replace him. My only assigned duty in that time was to every 2 weeks go into a backroom, log into about a dozen computers than log out. This was because the computers were backups and after 30 days without logging in they would be kicked off the network.

This was a 10 minute task every 2 weeks. That’s it. It was horrible. I was bored out of my mind. There were several other issues. I literally was going to other people asking “what can I help you with”…

Sometimes its not even avoiding work. Sometimes there is not a lot to do. My core job at this point is very reactionary fixes for a legacy system at a large company. It does not really break though. But like, ysterday I had to replace a 15+ year old server. With another 15+ year old server I had here.

Today, I basically have nothing going on, no calls, nothing to fix. I have been at the office for 2.5 hours dicking around on my phone.

I used to fill the daydoing random training, but I have learned a lot.of what I can and care about with the resources I have. I basically run a couple of teams but they are all not very active. I could find a new job mayne but this one pays great and almost anything else wpuld require moving which I do not want to do for a variety of reasons.

I am the only one even in the building 90% of the time.

It does get old, but its also fairly cushy, and I am very happy to assist others when they message me or whatever for help, which happens a lot.

I act my wage. I don’t avoid work, but I don’t do my work quickly enough that I’m left with more time to do extra work. I try not to go out of my way to invent more work for myself either, as that just gets exploited and becomes the new expectation from me.

Simple, you finish everything you have to do early but they don’t let you go home, so you screw around trying to find something

When I spend days fighting my executive function to start a task, and when I finally do it only takes 15 minutes
