I would love to take a class on functional analysis
I love the idea of open courseware but I find I need a class with other people to focus/stay committed to a particular topic long enough.
That’s odd, I’ve already taken courses covering the material described in that course. The functional analysis course I wanted to take covers:
Banach and Hilbert spaces, bounded linear maps, Hahn-Banach theorem, open mapping theorem, closed graph theorem, topologies, nets, Hausdorff spaces, dual spaces, weak topologies, Tychonoff’s theorem, Banach-Alaoglu theorem, reflexive spaces.
Interesting how they split things up differently.
I wrote a computer game (including the engine), and matrix / vector math plays a key role in movement and rendering. Definitely needed some refreshers, but the good thing is it is not abstract anymore like it was in school, all math things are directly relevant to in-game objects and mechanics.
I took a computer graphics class as a freshman that blew my mind with the concepts, but the math was way above my level. Basically 1/2 the class was graduate students, and the prof was talking about partial derivatives on day 1. There wasn’t even a math requirement…
Around 4 years after the class I went and relearned it and finally realized what the teacher was talking about and I was blown away for a 2nd time.

Honestly, if you audit the class without the pressure of the grade, it probably WOULD be fun. The stress usually comes from needing a good GPA etc
A class of students doing that would be a million times more fun for the professors too. Acadamia would be so much better if education were its primary purpose.
I went back to school to study advanced math a couple years ago and it was a blast. Math as an adult is great.

That was my niche in grad school. I authored a paper proving that the CW-complexes in the category of small categories under the Joyal-Tierney model structure are exactly the groupoids. I never came up with a reason why anyone should care, but at least it was fun.

Ngl, I’ve been getting that a bit recently despite those classes being super stressful. There are a few classes, not just math, that I feel like I could gain a lot more out of by retaking them now with a couple years in the field behind me. Not that I did poorly in those classes, I did very well, but a lot of that stuff was just too abstract to me at the time to stick beyond the next exam.
I sometimes wish I could retake my school math classes. I was never good at math but I feel like now that I have seen some practical applications for stuff that we were force fed back them, I could learn it much better.
What practical applications?
I work in computer science (specifically in embedded software) and had a task last year where I needed to extract the pulse rate from a biosignal by detecting the signal peaks and measuring the intervals between them. Derivatives of the signal can be used for the peak detection, but I honestly did not think about this until a coworker reminded me.
For processing any digital signal, digital filters are incredibly important. When working with them, you will be exposed to polynomials though.
If you are interested in robotics, vectors are also quite important.
I got as far as Calculus III and Linear Algebra in college. Nowadays I’m sure I could not do a derivation or an integration to save my fucking life and when I see a matrix my brain thinks “wow, numbers in a grid!”
It was actually fun to do khan academy high school math on my own terms
I think I might do that too in the future. Tried it before but I wasn’t in the right head space back then.
I was going to say something similar. When there’s no ‘pressure’ and you just get to learn it without being tested on it, and potentially have negative outcomes if you do poorly on that testing, then it’s just a neat fact much like any science meme being shared.
