I walked into a Subway one time after a ride wearing my lycra bike shorts and jersey. Some little boys saw me, hiked their shorts up to give themselves wedgies, and started dancing around me like the dwarfs in This is Spinal Tap during the “Stonehenge” scene. Everybody in the place was laughing. I laughed as well and never went into a store again wearing my bike shorts. Kink-shaming can be a force for good.

          a MAMIL

WTH, there’s an initialism to make everyone feel bad these days*… Leave them Lycra daddies alone! I can hardly think of a more wholesome hobby!

(* no offense meant to acronym & initialism smiths. Your work is valued.)

I would agree except for the $15,000 bicycle. It’s just comedy how much these things cost these days.

They don’t have to though … mine looks moderately fancy but is really just a collection of used or discounted parts I scraped together over the last 20 years … I have two jerseys, both bought when they were on sale, one is probably 15 years old …

New shorts every once in a while because they wear out, the cheap ones work fine for me …

So I still look like a MAMIL but in reality it’s a fairly low-budget hobby …

Proud MAMIL here. I don’t find it insulting at all. I think it’s some cute and fun self-deprecating humor.

Pretty sure that acronym isn’t new.

(Also, it really is an acronym pronounced “mammal,” not an initialism.)

Yeah, nothing wrong with that. I’m not super into it, because I think it’s a bit over the top if you’re just doing it occasionally (more of just riding an ebike myself from time to time to enjoy the nature and also doing something for my body)… But I have a friend who’s super into it and can afford the expensive gear… he’s also caring a LOT about health (only eating non-UPF, only eating “carb” food when his body needs it during cycling, etc.). It mainly started when he got very ill and since then it was a wakeup call for him. Well, let those people enjoy life and let them value the things they believe in! Nothing wrong with that (as long as they don’t act like “assholes” thinking the streets are only for themselves)

Moustache doesn’t make any difference though. Victor Campenaerts tested this in a wind tunnel. I suppose with a goatee, a hairy chin might cause some drag.

Nice try, aliens, I’m not paying any gym subscriptions. Your mocking won’t prevent me from exercising outdoors

I don’t know any cyclist that thinks they look good in that gear. We all wear it because it’s the only thing that makes sitting on a bike saddle for 4+ hours at a time physically tolerable.

You can get cycling clothes that just look like clothes, it’s a two layer system with underwear that do the job of cycle shorts, then a reasonably close fitting outer layer.

Road guys wear lycra because it’s aero.

I mean … it’s mostly functional but in times when I’m in decent shape (which fluctuates) in a way I like the look of a well-fitted jersey 🫣 😅 … bibs and helmets always look kinda awkward though …
