The very least paid services could do is support unified apps that let us show and search what we’re have access to from the TV, rather than having to do it from justwatch.com or something, but no, they all want to be the centre of the universe, while having the bare minimum of content at the maximum price the market can bear.

Assuming this meant pirated tapes (unsure if that msg was for digital or not) but even digital has been going on longer than streaming services were available. Its like people forgot about napster and kazaa. Though to be fair they may not have been around for them but it’s not like older people had no options when the Internet was newer.
I got into the digital stuff around 2002ish with eDonkey. There was a big MST3k trading community at the time, and I had access to an OC-48 line back then. All the 90 minute episodes were sized to CD, so I had a whole spindle of episodes.

Hear hear! I usually do some research into how the media was intended to look by the directors. And old school stuff, I of course avoid having in 4K and whatnot.
I watched some tube-u-mentary a couple of weeks ago that talked about 1080 vs 4k. A shocking amount of fresh content is shot in 2k, editied tand they goes 4k only when they apply the SFX.
THEN, i started looking at 3D releases, there was a bunch of new stuff, it appears it’s all virtual 3D :(

I went all to AV1 last year. Enough stuff supports it, and realtime transcoding on a (relatively cheap) Arc GPU works well enough.
AV1 is superior enough for both size and visual fidelity, that it’s worth the slightly extra encoding time. But absolutely not if you don’t have HW encoding.
Yep HEVC can suck one. AV1 is the format everyone wanted, media formats shouldnt have any loyalties tied to them

I have multigig in my area. I currently pay for 8 gig but my provider sells 15 gig up/down. I’m sure there are plenty of rural areas with awful speed but I suspect that’s the same anywhere in the world, not just America.

That’s actually not especially good in the EU as far as I can tell (also in the EU, have the same, €15 a month).
That said, it’s pretty easy and cheap to get the rest of one’s setup (router, Ethernet cables, the actual torrent machine) with Gigabit-Ethernet so that it all actual works at 1Gbps end-to-end but costs a bit more to upgrade one’s internal network and download machines (I use a MiniPC next to the router) to go above that - everything pretty much supports 1Gbps by default nowadays, whilst only some stuff supports 2.5Gbps, and you definitely have to pay quite a bit extra for 10Gbps.
The kit I had for years already supported Gigabit Ethernet all the way and I would need newer kit to really use properly a fibre Internet connection above 1Gbps, which is why I personally did not go for the 2.5Gbps or even 10Gbps (the latter would be €45/month). That and downloading an x265 1080p torrent of a 1h episode of a TV series from a popular public tracker taking between 30s and a minute is good enough for me and I don’t really want to spend more money to bring that down to 10-20s or less.

I live in a shithole of a town whose buildings are lined with CAT5 copper cables. Those reach 10 Gbps up to 55 meters with good quality active equipment (switches, repeaters, OLTs), which is the next problem: in this town, the municipality owns the fiber and they have “better” things to spend their money on than changing the residential equipment to be 10GBASE-T, or IEEE 802.3an-2006 compatible. My ISP of course takes advantage of the situation and overcharges me for my measly 1 Gbps but hey… At least they gave me a public IP for free 🤣

I think I still have movies that I had ripped off of rented dvds on an old hard drive around here somewhere, from over twenty years ago when I still had dial up internet. (It was quicker to just rent and rip than download a movie at 3-4kps.)
But also, they look real shit compared to what we’re used now.

You can get a cheap Android TV Player for about $50 that will connect to your TV via HDMI, connect to your network via Wi-Fi or even Ethernet (I suggest you the latter if you can - much better performance, no hiccups if the Wi-Fi channel you’re using is also used by a lot of other stuff) and play any MKV videos it can access on your network (so, for example, you could share them in a Windows share).
This is kinda the setup I had maybe a decade and a half ago (only back then they were called TV Media Players and it was before Android).
You can get a TV Stick which is sorta the same but smaller, hangs from the HDMI port on your TV and those never have Ethernet.
You can get any of the hardware supported by LibreELEC - the cheapest being ARM-based Single Board Computers like Raspberry Pi or Orange Pi - and install LibreELEC in it and use that. Basically works like the Android TV Player only less bloated and you control that device fully.
Personally I now have an N100 Mini-PC on my living room with Lubutu (I installed Lubunto because I thought that it would be too little PC for a more normal distro, but frankly that thing can run a normal distro just fine) with Kodi always ON and on front (so from the TV side it just looks like a Media browsing and playing interface). The reason for having a bit more generic hardware there is that the machine is ALSO my Torrent server (with QBittorrent, which you can remotey add torrents to from your personal PC using a browser plugin and remotely manage from a browser) AND it’s also my home NAS (so, same place were the media files end up stored).
It’s connected directly to my router via Ethernet so it downloads and uploads at 1Gbps. I generally manage it remotely via SSH from my own PC and have a wireless remote for it (which works just like a normal remote, except that you can’t use it to switch the machine ON, only OFF, plus do other buttons just do the normal play, stop and all the other standard functions in Kodi) so for using it as a media player in my living room it works like a dedicated TV Media Player or a Smart TV and doesn’t at all look like there’s a PC in my living room connected to my TV, but I have full control over what’s running there and it isn’t selling my personal data to anybody or shoving adverts in front of me.

Mine does and it can play video just fine. But hooking up your TV to your server via jailbreaking your TV might also be an option if it’s an LG
They have HDMI ports if you want to directly connect them to a PC and just use it as a screen. Or an ethernet port you can use to play stuff over the network (usually by running a media server and having a client app on the TV).
i got obsessed with the smart playlists and home screen sections on jellyfin and now i just spend all day making quirky collections and channels on ersatztv cries
