It’s mostly useful for small cuts because it’s also awkward, but it will cut instead of bend.
It works because your thumb and fingers apply sideways force that pushes the cutting blades together if the scissors match the hand or apart if they don’t, but reversing the grip (as in having the blades on your palm side instead of pointing away from you) reverses the forces they apply.
that or a finger goes flying. leftie scissors (well, rightie scissors for me) are so damn easy to hurt yourself with.
