I would never use a hotel TV by choice. When it happens, it’s because there’s literally nothing else to do in that moment. But even then, it’s a struggle of shit quality, the most fucked up position in the room imagineable, unintelligible audio, and a bombardment of unskippale advertising.

Really, the only thing entertaining is seeing if any previous guests stayed logged into Netflix, then finding weird stuff to add to their ‘Continue Watching’ category.

And nowadays they let you cast to them (sometimes). But even ones that were locked I’ve gone and just asked for the unlocked remote and maintenance has always provided. The hotel brand cares; the workers do not give a fuck.

I just plug in my AppleTV or Switch or laptop…

the issue is usually that you can’t adjust the display settings for a more suitable picture

We would come in from the beach or bars drunk, high, and overexcited, but knowing we had to sleep or the next day would be ruined. So we’d turn on a movie to fall asleep to. Unfortunately the last time, it was Addams Family Values, and my ass stayed up extra late watching the whole thing.

We haven’t had cable in 12 years. Whenever we go to a hotel we specifically look for low quality reality tv with lots of ads. It’s so ridiculous that it becomes funny and entertaining, for about 20 minutes that is.

I used to watch FoxNews for shits just to see the wild shit they show, but recently the hotel I stay at most frequently no longer gets that channel. it was really disappointing, now I have to hope to catch criminal minds reruns or a random movie

Try pushing on it. Half the time the mounts are basically rails so you don’t have to center the tv on the studs.

Honestly, good point. OP, could you be satisfied with this explanation? Maybe the interior designer did this as an homage to their favorite game of five years ago?

Why not a streaming stick? You can watch anything you have at home, or jellyfin and also everything you have at home.

Well, my laptop bag has a Thunderbolt to HDMI cable in it. So that beats any streaming stick. Though the streaming stick doesn’t have to deal with overscan and other issues. It’s not a bad idea to add one to the tech bag. I’ll have to look into which ones let me do what I want.

Yeah, I do my laptop just because I always have it, since I’m always doing work in whatever downtime there is, people showering, whatever. Remote is nice. I have been lazy enough to remote desktop from my phone to the laptop to change things so I didn’t have to get up. It is incredibly inefficient.

Do you have a recommendation? I’ve had a Fire stick in the past, and it was a POS (I had the entry model, paid like 20 for it). Roku has been enshittifying lately and so has Fire OS. I’d want to be able to cast to it from the MacBook or my iPhone, or my wife’s Android phone. I do have an Apple TV box at home, but I’ve never taken it to a hotel room.

Because not every hotel lets you connect to “home” or has internet good enough for a streaming service.

Of course you can connect to home, that’s just using the internet.

I don’t think I have been in one with such bad WiFi I couldn’t stream in years.

If a hotel has bad wifi, and really most do (just not that bad) I would be black listing them immediately.
