I am feeling the woes of a the 64gb Steamdeck users and i’m wondering it this adapter for an sd card would work?
Size and speed issues aside, this probably won’t work at all. My understanding is that many m.2 slots are multi-purpose, with nvme, data, and USB data pathways. Most adapters like this just connect the micro SD to the USB pathways in the m.2 slot.
As far as I know, the deck has a NVNE only slot, so something like this that requires the USB part of the m.2 slot won’t work.
I don’t think there is an NVME to micro SD card adapter that exists at the size needed, but even if you do find one, Unless you already have a very large Micro SD card on hand that you specifically want to use, I would just shoot for a used 256 or 512 SSD on ebay or a local marketplace app.
Now if you want a realllyyyyyy jank solution to use an additional micro sd card on it, you could always get a cheap USB C slim dock with a SD card slot and power delivery and tape it on the back.
I would not do that tp my steamdeck in this economy 😂
It doesn’t specify the length but it looks a lot longer than 30mm, so probably not.
To add on top of other people’s comments, SD cards should not be considered reliable. They are made from the cheapest bottom of the barrel NAND flash. For storing contents that you write once then read many times and can easily replace, they are fine. But you don’t want it for an OS drive.
I ran on a MicroSD for years with no problem. Doesn’t need to be reliable, it’s just for gaming.
For a secondary drive of game installs that makes perfect sense. It’s an ideal use case. If you used it for an OS drive I am very surprised. What hardware was it used in?

Doesn’t the SteamDeck already have a SD card slot? Getting a bigger SD card will be for sure the better option.
That seems like it would let you use an SD card in an M.2 slot? Why not just use the Deck’s micro SD slot? If you’re going to open up the Deck you ought really find an SSD to put in the M.2 slot.
I just dont have the money for that. Ive already got an sd card and $30.
You could try looking for local listings of SSDs. I saw someone selling their 512 GB Steam Deck SSD on ebay for cheap because they had upgraded.
I wouldn’t try it:
- They don’t list the dimensions and I wouldn’t trust my eye on determining if it’s a 2230 length
- It’s B keyed. It might fit in the socket, but you’d at best be operating at sata speeds
- You don’t want to run an OS long-term off a microsd card. It’s possible, and a lot of SBCs do, but its literally my last choice of physical storage media for something I actually intend to use.
I’d get a really large capacity microsd and use the existing port or bite the bullet and get an actual 2230 M.2 NVME. Both will be less problematic.

The Steam Deck already has a built-in microSD card slot – are you having problems with it or something?
Since i have a 64 gb ssd i put all my games on the sd card.
Seems like the easier option is to get another SD card and switch out cards depending on what set of games you want to play. A 256GB micro SD is ~$40 US right now.
Its not the sd card thats the problem. My ssd is full and i cant seem to trim the fat anywhere. I deleted the shader caches and removed programs i dont use. But 🤷♂️

Both sd card and internal memmory are maxed out.
