I use RSS to follow comic artists who haven’t made the jump to the fediverse (or don’t otherwise have an RSS feed).
Invite your favorite creators to the fediverse! Mastodon, Lemmy, Piefed all have RSS
Tumblr and Webtoon do too!
RIP Aaron Swartz and fuck spez
spez lies to investors
It’s been useless as a platform for a while. Now they’re making it more and more useless as a data repository. I use Reddit now like I use Stack Overflow. Only when it pops up as a search result.
So much knowledge is going to be lost, honestly. And before people point out lemmy/kbin (and other Reddit-like fedi software), it’s still not comparable.
Or searchable. I’ve tried several times to find things I’d seen previously on the fediverse and a solid two thirds I just couldn’t find them again.
Reddit results on the other hand are basically a perfect match anytime I want to find something.
Yes, searchability is an issue. It’s partly how the big web search engines work, but I think it’s also partly that many people actively want to be excluded from web search (which is fine on the microblogging side of fedi, but it makes less sense here)
What? Maybe the client you’re using isn’t a great one, but the fediverse search is awesome. Reddit’s otoh, is notoriously shit.
I use the fedia.io search, and also search engines to try and find what I’m after. Ddg barely has any fediverse results at all and none of them are relevant. The fedia search sometimes has what I’m after, but I have to treat like the oldschool searches that didn’t even allow for words being misspelled in order to find anything.
If I’m searching for a synonym to what I type, there’s no hope for me using the fedia.io tool.
Oh, I see what you mean. I thought you meant within the sites. You’re right, the fediverse doesn’t really show anymore. There was a short window when it did, but I think the big corps shut that shit down.
And even then, depending on your platform, your answer better be in the top five comments or you’ll have to log in.
I think of it more as ExpertSexchange.
Whatever it’s called, I’m hear take whatever I can get, and give nothing back! /s
What is a “Reddit”?
It’s like a Digg where the powermods have been replaced by bots. Same shit, same fate.
Well, that’s upsetting.
Edit: and the public API as well, I guess this might be the end of alternative frontends for Reddit (my only way to access Reddit these days)
honestly what it’s likely going to end up happening is that developers of the alternative front ends/apps are going to start masquerading as the official Reddit client and then claiming that they don’t have a Reddit account so therefore they haven’t violated any terms of service. We saw that a little bit when the API got locked down in the first place.
And then leave it as a use at your own risk-style system. Much like how grayjay, tizen and the Revance Project works when you decide to log in your Google account.
Yeah, it violates policy, however, it’s not on the application because they only provided the means of being able to do it its on the user to decide to actually use said means
So eventually also useless for people like me who don’t have an account.
It’s going to be valuable for about 12 more minutes. What happens when no one shows up to create the reason to show up anymore?
Reddit investors are throwing money into a black hole
Dude, we’re already long past that point. I went back to Reddit after three years of boycotting it just to see its current state a couple weeks ago. Every community seems to be a ghost town. Like the subs that I had participated in and enter daily has gone from like 10 plus posts a day to maybe a post every 11 days if that.
Many of the entertainment style subs that I had gone in have been radio for silent weeks.
And then the actual public popular subs are an absolute dumpster fire. It’s either obvious bot posts or people flaming others in the comments, which don’t get me wrong, Reddit always had, but to me it seems like it’s worse. I don’t know if it’s just because I’ve gotten used to a much lower traffic system like Lemmy, or if it has actually gotten worse though.
I think there’s a pretty solid difference between comments on reddit vs here, and has been since the start, but it also does feel like the comments on reddit have become a lot nastier than I used to use it. No idea which one changed more to cause the bar to be adjusted.
Well there goes the final vestiges of traffic I guess I was giving them
Welcome new lemmings arriving on the wave of this particular fuck up
Pretty sure you can just add .json to most pages on Reddit and get JSON instead
