Jesus. Fuck. Are they STILL making superhero movies?
James Gunn has been doing them really well, unlike marvel. Lots of heart, comedy and bad music.

Why are they playing her off as apathetic? Super girl always was kinda enthusiastic and happy in the iterations I’ve seen.
Eh, there have been, like, 4 different Supergirls, and they’re all different. Silver age Supergirl is basically just Superman, but a girl. Post-crisis Supergirl is an artificial life form from a pocket universe or something (I forget her whole deal, but she’s the worst one). Powergirl is Clark’s cousin, but she’s from another universe, shows a lot of cleavage, and her weakness is wood.
In 2004, they brought back the classic, “cousin,” backstory, but this time changed it so she’s a teenager sent to take care of baby Clark, but thanks to a suspended animation mishap, she arrived on Earth when he was in his 30s. Some writers have tried making this version a little more cynical, which makes sense; unlike Clark, she remembers life on Krypton and sees how primitive Earth is in comparison. It’s like one those stories where a high-schooler is bitter because their parents moved them from the big city to a podunk town. It’s basically Space Footloose, and Supergirl is Space Kevin Bacon.
I enjoyed her in Super Hero Girls where she came across as more annoyed that she had to do anything rather than apathetic. I know it was a kids cartoon but it was still good. I fear this movie will instead showcase her as an apathetic shit head who doesn’t care about anything until big moment or love interest etc occurs and then she’ll learn her lesson yada yada.
Hollywood can be so boringly predictable it makes me apathetic myself.
I have seen more than one animated films where she is initially a brat and/or just a bitter teen
She winds up (through bad attitude and manipulation as well) as one of the Furies working for Darkside so this “take” is not entirely out of canon
In the comics she has a lot of shit going on. She was 16 when Krypton blew up and was put into hyper sleep before drifting through space. When she woke up her cousin is now older than her and sanctimonious as fuck. She is basically alone and is doing her best and pushing all this down to emulate her cousin and be the role model he established.
She then meets her alternate self in Powergirl and she sees what she could be if she was herself. A whole universe of people started saying “Kara this isn’t you” when it really is her finally getting to act like herself. She has a breakdown, joins the Red Lantern Corps, and basically becomes the strongest thing in DC for a few issues. She’s incredible.
The apathy is a cool side to see and a side of her that is totally present but never shown. James Gunn is taking some real chances portraying the characters from the comics and not just pop culture echoes.

I haven’t followed DC at all, but I suppose it could be a character growth thing through the movie? Or they just got bored with the happy little white girl saving the world, and moving more in the ke$ha direction? Either way, it sound more interresting to me.
If she stays a two-dimensional, apathetic party girl, I’ll be disappointed. I doubt that’s her entire personality, though. Can’t really learn much about a character with 1 minute of screen time.

They’ve been saying that the movie is based on Woman of Tomorrow for a while now. Trailer came out today and the second scene is her at a space bar (with Krypto, for some reason lol).

Yeah there’s been a few versions like this. If your entire world blew up when you were a teenager and everyone you knew was gone, it would be reasonable to not start off as a chipper person.
What makes you think she’ll be two-dimensional? Perhaps she’ll be a well fleshed out apathetic party girl.
Maybe this is the movie where she learns to take passion in her work and becomes the enthusiastic superhero you know.

There are two things that bother me about this poster:
- If she is floating in midair, why does she feel the need to pull one leg up higher than the other?
- If her right leg is bent, why doesn’t her coat stick out where her bent knee would be?
It looks like a cheaply-done bad photoshop job where they cropped the right leg and moved it up to make it look bent.
One leg higher is a very common pose for flying characters. Her knee doesn’t need to stick out very far for this pose, not more than the drape of the coat suggests.
If her right leg is bent, why doesn’t her coat stick out where her bent knee would be?
It’s not uncommon when having your hands in the pockets of an open long coat, that the garment is pulled forward, lessening the drape effect that would be expected with a slightly bent leg in this example.
Also, I’m looking at it a bit longer and it seems like a cutout of someone leaning against the wall with their leg up. Look how far forward her left leg is in the opening.
Its that what do you do with your hands thing. What do you do with your legs if they are just hanging there while you are floating. Has this never happened to you? /s

People had a lot of shit to say about the superman movie trailer too, but it was a really good movie that had more emotional impact than the last 10 marvel movies put together.
Im inclined to let them run here, no matter how superficial it looks at first glance.
Honestly I was kind of let down by Superman, considering how much people hyped it up. The first two acts were interesting and had me hooked, but the ending just felt a little flat to me. It definitely felt like a “hold on, we’re just getting started” movie rather than something standalone.
I wasn’t especially fond of the characterization of Clark’s parents, but I think that’s just a personal preference and being used to other interpretations (Smallville, DCAU, etc). I do think they worked very well with the tone of the movie.
It also didn’t feel particularly dissimilar to most Marvel movies, just with a little better tone and planning.

A matter of taste of course but I actually loved them… I hated the Barbie and Ken portrait for red neck farmers… these ones felt like more real “people of the land”
I specially liked the part of his Dad who seemed so physically vulnerable and weakened by age/work/illness giving the biggest emotional push to a figurative Man of Steel
Yeah, and a lot of depictions of the Kent farm have a very Norman Rockwell vibe, with a large two story house, a huge barn/silo, and acres of land. It’s very iconic, but also hasn’t been the reality for American farmers for at least 50 years. In this movie, the relatively small plot of land and cramped Ranch house felt much more plausible for modern-day Kents.

They were particularly one-note, able to offer a simple home and philosophy, but not much more. They WERE in a scene or two… they were intended to provide a “back to centre” anchor for Superman/Clark, they were not main even supporting cast

Right, they weren’t especially important to the plot except one or two scenes. And don’t really have the emphasis that they’ll be particularly important in the future, which is contrary to past incarnations. Like I said, they worked for this movie… but, especially considering the “But wait… there’s more” feeling of the movie, and that it’s meant as the start of a new franchise… they feel flat and rather unimportant. Which felt disappointing.

Regarding your second paragraph, I see your point. I did not really think Clark parents will have much to do in the future (they honestly have not even in the better developed and much longer animated movies). They are just (usually) moral anchor for the early years of Superman and sometimes the “escape from the city life”… I would not expect them to feature in the future films
I was fine with Clark’s parents, but bothered that they met Lois for the first time, she stayed overnight, and we got virtually no interaction. Definitely one of the spots where I’d have liked to see some of the screen time given to overlong action scenes or the Justice Whatever reallocated to Superman’s supporting cast. I did like the movie overall, though.
Imo it felt like Gunn’s DC version of GoTG. He has a formula and hasn’t strayed from it in the last 10 or so years; it’s starting to get really old imo.
It’s not helping that everyone seems to be trying to mimic his style too.
Last 10 Marvel movies except for GOTG 3 by the same author.

Even Gun’s underdeveloped characters are often rather deep and thought out. Rooker’s Caliban from the suicide squad. For a disposable fakeout opening character. Following along with him at the start you get to know a bit about him just watching. Kind of like him a bit even. Then boom! Chum in the waters.
I haven’t watched the new season of Peacemaker. But if he can handle anti-heros like he did with season 1. I think Supergirl of in good hands.

One was a wild enough ride. It’s a self. If two somehow managed to be bonkers on top of already bonkers, then it aught to be epic.
It’s good but the ending kinda fizzles out, I loved the show and hyped it up constantly, I prob wont rewatch after that ending.
