Yeah, I pretty regularly have asshole encounters when I’m in the city. In my home town people are pretty chill. Haven’t been randomly called a slur like that since high school and back then responding with violence nipped it in the bud.

Oh hey I didn’t even notice the asterisk they used for censoring the slur. My brain pronounced the entire offensive word and I didn’t even feel offended on anyone’s behalf.

I read someone saying the other day, that Hallmark movies make a lot of sense if you think of small town empty-nest mothers as their main demographic.

Edit: I found the comment, couldn’t find the article they’re talking about though.

Gay grandson of a big landowner in the midwest, like my family owned half a county at one point. Trust me there was never any worry about “inheritance” making it down to my generation ;) The factory farms bought it all up years ago, and it paid for several old ladies to go on trips, live lavishly, and die very old in assisted living facilities.

Whenever I think back to my hometown I remember how passionate I and many others were about getting the fuck out of there, and remember the types of people who said they’d never leave. It lines up with the comic and political lines perfectly

I was in WV visiting family for Thanksgiving. I wasn’t wearing incredibly nice clothing, but it wasn’t just a hoodie or whatever other junk is cheap. I really felt out of place (which I was). I was getting a hotdog at a place that only opens for two days every year now, that was a staple a famous, and the next nicest clothes was probably some old guy wearing a jacket either from a surplus store or from Vietnam or something.

The good news is no one cared. I wasn’t called anything and no one seemed to be bothered. I am a straight white man though.

As someone who wears a surplus Czech army field jacket, I take umbridge with thine implications. Surplus is just thrift with a bias towards khaki, camo, and questionable food products. Also you can get some pretty solid storage boxes via surplus vendors, I keep my bungies and jumpers in a waterproof 30mm ammo case in the bed of my truck

It would have to be someone who knows him, or something about his style, accessories, or behavior, that emboldened a stranger to assume he was gay. The comic gives no hint at any of this being evident.

Or maybe that guy calls everyone a faggot because he’s always confrontational.

My boss is from a small town and, for religious reasons, doesn’t swear and is deeply uncomfortable with it.

But we asked one day if there’s a swear he does use he said

“I hate to admit it, but faggot rolls off my tongue too easily.”

Its the closest he’s ever come to swearing.

People really think the south/rural areas have people being giant racist homophobes to strangers… No they save that for people they know or think will agree with them

        Here’s where you’re wrong

Their litmus test for “people they think will agree with them” is just: be a white man.

I am a burly white dude. Tall, big beard, I look like I walked out of the mountains… Unprompted, some white people will casually say some unhinged rascist shit to me. And have, many times.

One time there was a shooting nearby, a white maintenence worker told me about it, and then without missing a beat goes “it was two black guys shooting at eachother, so much for brotherly love, right?”

Another time, in a gas station up in the sticks, Im buying a can of monster. Some white stranger, unprompted, taps me on the shoulder starts telling me about how the logo is a Jewish letters for the sign of the devil…

So, no, you dont have to be someone these people know… you just have to a white man. They assume any white man (especially masculine presenting) is one of them.

I tend to look like a hippie that was forced to dress up for church and people definitely just assume I’ll agree with their racist bullshit because I’m white.

What’s sad is, this is as-close as it gets to gay flirting in public in a lot of the rural US. You’re actually a hot-commodity if you’re out-and-proud enough to clap-back with a proposition … just gotta play-it extra-safe re:meetups.

Personally not a fan of people acting like urban = queer paradise when the city closest to me has had some pretty significant increases in anti-LGBTQ hate crimes:

LACo Reports 2025 Is the Second-Highest for Hate Crimes in 44 Years [highest = 2024]

There were 102 anti-transgender crimes, the largest number ever documented in this report. A staggering 95% of these crimes were violent

Hate crimes targeting non-binary people sharply increased 275% from 4 to 15, higher than 2023, when we began tracking this targeted group

72% of crimes motivated by sexual orientation targeted gay men. This was the second-largest number ever documented for this motivation

But yeah, only rural bad or something.

A numerical increase is potentially worrying, but for urban/rural comparison you need to look at per capita statistics. (You should also keep in mind that these are reported, recognized crimes and there may be confounding factors)
