I never used lemmynsfw much, but honestly I think things moving from Lemmy to PieFed is a positive move in general.
Well damn. Now I have a whole app of NSFW. Nice!
Lemmy Sync doesn’t seem to work with Piefed though. I’m still sad.
What I would really like is the opposite of a porn or nsfw filter. I want a filter so I can see only nsfw posts. Do any apps have this?
Use the local view on fedinsfw
That helps, but there is definitely nsfw content that isn’t on just the one instance.
Boost for reddit used to let you go to a random nsfw subreddit. That feature has not appeared in boost for lemmy unfortunately
That was a feature of reddit. Just like r/random, you could do r/randnsfw. I enjoyed that feature. Looks like they got rid of that feature.
Yea I noticed this one too. The thing here is for the users to help with the costs, otherwise it’s gonna end like lemmynsfw.
AFAIK lemmynsfw ended like it did because the main admin disappeared.
Ironically it demonstrates what happens when something is too centralised
I wouldn’t say it was centralized. They repeatedly begged over and over for volunteers to help moderate and even administrate the instance. Nobody stepped up, it seems.
They reached out to the community. The community declined their requests.
One guy stepped up as an admin. It’s the owner of the new instance. He didn’t have the necessary access to go in and pay the bills or have the deep server level access to fix things that went wrong.
He’s got a plan for his backup admins.
Yes, but I know that server cost was a thing too. Correct me if I’m wrong.
They used to post updates.Oh don’t get me wrong, definitely donate to your instance. But it’s just not possible to keep running an instance if the one person with full control of the infrastructure disappears; feddit.de had the same issue, and feddit.de/feddit.org was AFAIK always doing well in terms of donations.
Sort of the Achilles Heel of the Fediverse generally speaking.
It’s a loss network of hobbyists, not a self-reproducing state agency or profit motivated business.
I really want municipalities to spin up their own instances (or at least pay for hosted instances.)
Imagine a world in which local (and larger) governments have their instances and don’t have to rely upon corporations like twitter. @mayor@sanfrancisco.city, etc.
That’s a really cool idea. The internet has really done a number on local news, maybe a world where your social media infrastructure was run by your local municipality would change that. At minimum, it would give people an interesting way to interact with people in their community.
I chose to see it as a strength as well though.
Lemmy as a whole is still very much alive. We lose servers every now and then, but no server is the whole platform.
If your server disappears, look for a new one and pick one that will fit your needs better this time. Or help pay for costs if that’s why it disappeared.
It’s a real catch-22. The ability to spin up new servers leads to plenty run by your run-of-the-mill person with some knowledge about hosting. The downside is that it’s inherently unstable due to relying on your run-of-the-mill person with some knowledge about hosting to maintain a social media server, and it’s always easier to destroy than it is to create.
Each time a server goes down, there’s some percentage of users and communities that won’t return due to the effort of relocating and starting all over. Why go through the effort of finding a new server, especially one run the way you want, and start over when the same thing could happen within a month. It’s like when a Discord server disappears, but your account gets deleted every time as well.
I thought the issue was that the admin in charge of the domain name registration just disappeared for like a year and the other admin didn’t have access to renew it. Where did you get the idea it had to do with funding?
From the monthly reports, they used to post updates. Looks like I’m wrong on that.
I have a question/concern. When I go to fedinsfw I see a lot of SFW posts there. I haven’t done much digging and I’m still a fediverse noob, are those posts showing up because fedinsfw is federated and those posts originate from elsewhere? Or are people going to fedinsfw to post non-porn? I hope people aren’t going there to post SFW stuff, I feel like we might be splitting up an already not-particularly-popular website into two websites, neither of which have a catchy name.
Fedinsfw is federated. Are you viewing posts by Home, Local or All? If you view by All you will see all of the posts that Fedinsfw has access to. If you view by Local you will only see the posts on the Fedinsfw instance.
Nice, thanks!
Replying cause I also still don’t really understand how this works even after like a year. Hopefully someone explains it to both of us lol
The other guy’s reply seems to be correct
Where do I fit in? I’m pro porn, but anti PieFed.
Why anti-Piefed?
Probably a variation of misinformation about some configurable, off by default settings: https://piefed.zip/c/fediverse/p/1005977/piefed-admin-settings-that-allow-to-enable-or-disable-content-filters-they-are-disabled-by
I don’t support their social credit score system, against shadowbanning, and it’s an Israeli supremists instance.
it’s an Israeli supremists instance.
Wait, what?
Piefed.social literally had the Palestine flag as a logo a few weeks ago
instance
Which instance are you referring to? Case in point, lemmy is made by rabid tankies, but you don’t have to use a tankie instance.
Exactly. Some don’t use tankie instances, PieFed doesn’t suit me. And again, one of my gripes with PieFed is their stance towards a social credit score.
But specifically you mention “an isreali supremecy instance”. Which instance are you referring to? Our discussion is around fedinsfw.app
PieFed. I’m under the impression that fedinsfw is under the PieFed umbrella. Am I wrong in that?
PieFed works the same way that Lemmy does. The software is freely available to anyone that wants to download and set up their own instances.
That’s what I was mentioning with Lemmy, the software is developed by Tankies and they run their own instance (Lemmy.ml) but anyone is free to download the software and run their own server, and that’s how you have .world, .zip, hilariouschaos.com, etc.
It’s the exact same with PieFed. The guy who runs fedinsfw.app is in no way affiliated with the creators of PieFed or any other instances. He just downloaded and installed the software.
you know it’s federated, you don’t need to be on piefed
