I actually watched a youtube video years ago. Before Garfield he tried to be edgy in his comics, and found it hard to make a living.

This was in the 70s. Newspapers didn’t want his edgy comics. So he went back and tried to make the most bland, boring, cringy comic he could with intentionally lame jokes.

Newspapers ate it up in the 80s, and it was a hit. So he made a new rule. No good writing allowed in Garfield. Make it as bland as possible to appeal to boring people.

And thats why he’s either a millionaire, or a billionaire today.

Archie’s always been edgy. I’ve seen a comic where one of them wore a gimp mask and leather underwear, while Veronica wore a corset, and held one of those stick whips, and said “Boys make good pets”.

How much edgier do you want it???

I mean, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was pretty fucking edgy when it first came out in comic books.

They were more like turtle assassins than goofy teenagers looking for pizza

I’m sure the s&m didn’t make it into the daily newspapers. I grew up reading Gary Larson’s compilations and his descriptions of censorship for strange reasons. If gimp Archie made it in, nothing makes sense.

Well…the dilbert guy was also a homophobic transphobic fascist. So I try not to think about him too much.

Just because Newspapers didn’t want it doesn’t mean people didn’t want it. Corporations intentionally bland up their products to appeal to the most people possible. Just look at the colors of bed linens that are commonly available, or car colors, or JJ Abrams movies. All intentionally blanded up to appeal to the widest demographic without even the possibility of offense.

I wonder how that might have impacted our diet… American cuisine in general is often considered bland and tasteless, even though some specific foods of ours are very well regarded. Maybe because we’ve been sold food targeting the broadest market possible for decades, impacting our cultural flavors?
