This ad just popped up and it should be more infuriating than just mildly, But it’s more of Google being Google. How many different tiers of YouTube are there now so Alphabet can skim off slightly higher margins from each user possible? Premium LITE? Really? And I am just tickled by the fact that the main perk is not that it removes ads but that there will be slightly less of them. “Pay us to watch ads” Is the new corporate standard.

Wow, I could get that thing I don’t care for by paying for that other thing I don’t care for. What a great deal.

Then get iOS and run yt plus. Quite literally iOS users CAN still run adless youtube even though it’s a bit of a hack (refresh every 7 days via SideStore app on your phone unless you have a dev membership)

Or the better solution if you care about privacy and freedom over convenience, get an Android phone with an openable bootloader. Preferably one that’s not a Pixel.

My next phone will be a Fairphone, but I’m not made of money so I’m stuck with my Samsung atm.

Haven’t kept up with the Android ecosystem after moving to iOS. I hear GrapheneOS is working with Motorola to support an upcoming phone of theirs if you’re privacy minded (GrapheneOS) and don’t want a Pixel (only device it currently runs on)

it genuinely makes me a bit angry that y’all never mention lineage, why are you ignoring by far the most normalized and usable android distribution??

It’s that circles thing all over again. Everyone get in the circles and put stuff in other circles here’s a firefly reference. YouTube, no it’s part of circle now, put all this stuff in circles and put your name on the YouTube comments so people can put you in circles. Put them in circles too. Little Google is going to take on Facebook put Facebook in circles too.

There was a rule back in the 90s that the more words were used in the title of the software the worse it was. Adobe Photoshop was good. Corel DrawMaker 3.5 for Windows 98 Special Edition was crap.

“Pay us and watch ads” has been around a long time. That’s what cable tv was. We’ve gone full circle.

One day, something new will come along and kill streaming in the same way streaming did cable. Once things get this fragmented, something else always comes along to replace it, and the cycle will repeat.

It will be cheap, easy to use, and everyone will switch. Once enough people move over, the big corporations will get involved and the enshitification will begin. It will be adveetised to death, segmented, and people will look for an alternative.

I prefer YouTube Premium Plus Silver tier. It still has ads, but they are premium ads, which I find go down my throat more smoothly. Anything less makes me gag.

the main perk is not that it removes ads but that there will be slightly less of them.

It does remove ads in most videos, just not in Shorts, or on music videos. The whole deal is they’re essentially un-bundling a music subscription from YT Premium, which makes it cheaper, and is then better if you, say, watch YouTube, but already use Spotify for your music.

Essentially, you don’t see any ads when you watch videos, AKA no midrolls, but you might see a small banner ad above the list of next suggested videos to the right of the video player, and if you constantly scroll shorts they might toss some ads in there as well.

Personally, as someone who doesn’t use YouTube for music, and doesn’t like scrolling shorts, I see this as perfectly reasonable as a way to reduce the cost, especially when you can click the Theater mode button on any video to block out the majority of the suggested videos area by default before any sidebar ad would even make it on your screen.
