I would rather donate to massgrave than buy a windows key
I have a regular donation going to Linux Mint. But I’ve kinda switched my main PC over to CachyOS a while back, so technically I’m not paying for the distro I’m using.
I still think Mint is the best. Just kind of confused about where my money should be going.
Are you going to stick with Cachy even though you prefer Mint? What do you like about it vs Cachy? Just asking since I’m considering a switch to Cachy.
Here are the things I love about Mint:
- Everything is doable with a nice GUI, sometimes more than CachyOS+KDE Plasma
- Very stable, very reliable
- Mint’s Update Manager is great
- Matches my personality/philosophy a bit more
- I installed it for my mom after her old drive died, and it just works for her (she is not a computer person so this is a big win)
- I quite like Cinnamon, though my feelings on this aren’t that strong, I’d be happy with just about any sane desktop environment
Here are the reasons I switched to CachyOS:
- My hardware is new enough that it really benefits from being up to date on everything upstream. On Mint, it’s not hard to switch to a newer kernel and stuff like that, but the more I stray from Mint’s defaults, the more I have to do to maintain my PC rather than just using Update Manager.
- I could not get VRR (FreeSync) to work on Mint Cinnamon. I think it might be impossible.
- I wanted to try other desktops like KDE, and see if Wayland makes any difference to me as a user (it doesn’t). Mint’s supported desktop choices are quite limited (just Cinnamon, Xfce and MATE) and I didn’t want to screw around getting an unsupported desktop to work, defeating a lot of Mint’s advantages.
- Generally wanted to be on the bleeding edge of software updates, just because.
I do have some qualms about CachyOS, specifically I feel like Shelly (their choice of GUI package manager) is undercooked and not ready to ship as default. You don’t have to use it though.
I’m going to stick with CachyOS for now, mostly because it’s just working for me and I don’t feel a strong reason to switch. I hear that Mint/Cinnamon is getting closer to Wayland, which might make for a good time to switch back to it. Or I’ll just stick with what’s working for me until it doesn’t.

I think the big point of the comparison though, is that Windows by nature is something you often have to defeat or somehow subvert to use.
It’s appalling to Linux people whose software is just like “Yeah do whatever, have fun.” XD

There was a time when buying that 5$ key was less hassle than trying to get some kms to run. Nowadays you just search “get activated win” if you forget the site’s name and their solution works every time
So I installed Windows 10 IOT LTSC on a PC I’m giving to a friend. It’s not activated, of course. Anything that friend needs to be concerned about if it’s not activated? They intend to use it for school and gaming.
Give them Linux or install win11 home unlicensed and let them deal with it.
If it’s a Dell OEM machine then there’s a license built into the bios.
Giving someone Win10 ltsc is asking for trouble.
Yeah, seconding the other person. At least give them 11 LTSC. And instead of worrying about activation, just use MASgrave to activate it and they’re golden. It’s a real activation as far as MS is concerned.
afaik the only things is the desktop watermark and being locked-out of the personalization in ‘settings’, so stuck with default theme, wallpaper, and so on.
registry edits or using a pre-configured custom installer can get around some (or all?) of these items.
updates will still be offered and installed.
You can activate it for free using something like this (use scripts from the internet at your own risk). I ran a script featured in a LTT video on my partner’s computer and never had a problem.
Page does not load, are you advising people to use scripts from the internet you yourself do not trust? Do you say install at your own risk just it’s because it’s the correct thing to do or because you installed something similar and now you advise other people to do the same without having checked what the script does?
If it’s the latter, please do not provide such advice.

I bought one on r/MicrosoftSoftwareSwap for really cheap back in the day with Bitcoin. It stopped working because I assume they sold the same key again. They never responded to me when I asked about it and Bitcoin blew up so much in price that it probably cost as much as a real key from Microsoft afterwards.

I donate to Disroot because I use their services and increase their costs, but otherwise I don’t donate to charities from the Global North. I highly prefer donating to charities and social movements in Brazil or other BRICS countries. It is more efficient because of the cost of living. Also, I don’t want to bolster the economy of countries that kill and rob the Global South. I also partially boycott their commercial products.
If you’re in the global north I think it’s very understandable to help local first, but as someone from the global south I’m very thankful for this nonetheless
