Recycling should never fall on the consumer. The extremely wealthy manufacturer can find a way to make non-toxic containers

I mean… logistically it would be more efficient if we all just recycled regardless, and then the polluters paid for the processing.

But also we should lean on those “reduce” and “reuse” parts of the recycling prayer.

Logistically it would be more efficient if we went back to having bottle deposits (and expanded it to include other types of containers) so that the packaging would be picked up and reused, not recycled.

But that’s functionally the same as what I’m saying: end consumer still has to put things in the right bins and place.

That’s not how that one works.

Recycling in the American sense means putting your glass and cans in the appropriate bins instead of the landfill bin.

… I am not american. As my instance suggests. Also landfilling some waste is safe and efficient.

          Things change in five years.

edit: To give a more thorough answer, I object to these broad statements like “plastic recycling is a scam”. Maybe it is in some countries, I know it isn’t in my country. So if you make statements like this, at least use something better than a five year old youtube video.

Fair enough, but Climate Town is a very well researched and put-together channel, and they cite their research. If any of this has changed significantly in the market he’s explicitly talking about (North America), then I can see your frustration. But I don’t think it’s gotten much better, especially not in the USA.

A big part of the video, if you get around to watching it is about how plastic recycling is objectively something born from an industry scam. It’s a scam because they knew the recycling couldn’t work how they were promising it would, and they pushed it anyways to evade accountability.

Some countries surely handle things better than North America, but that doesn’t automatically make plastic recycling a completely legitimate venture that isn’t laden with deception and and bullshit. I’m Canadian, and I know we don’t handle recycling in the best way. Do I still sort my trash, and recycle everything I’m able to? Of course! Anything is better than nothing, and Rollie explicitly says so in the video…

But it’s still accurate: the idea of recycling plastic is born from deception & lies, for the sake of money. If lying for money isn’t a scam, I don’t know what is.

are you witholding actual evidence that things have changed for… fun? or because you don’t have any? almost no plastic can even be recycled in the first place, and nearly all of that plastic bears fake logos implying it’s recyclable.

sure, i can freely put whatever plastic i want in my recycling bins, but that doesn’t mean anything on its own. it still gets separated out and sent to a landfill.

I gues you live in the USA then, because putting plastics in landfills is banned in my country. Also, this is how it is in the European Union. Not perfect, but over 40% recycled isn’t nothing. Now, wheres your evidence that everything from the recycling bin goes to landfills?

Bah, I can never remember and was just copying the comic. Apparently “judgment” is the standard American spelling, and “judgement” is English. They both look right to me. I need to remember to always consult the Terminator:
