I have been looking for a sudoku app which allows me to use different symbols rather than numbers because sometimes the numbers themselves confuse me, so using random symbols helps to keep them arbitrary. After years of waiting I submitted a feature request for Open Sudoku and a couple of weeks later it was implemented. Years of waiting, a few weeks waiting after asking, just amazing. Open Source software is definitely the future, and the communities around Open Source project, while a little variable, are absolutely outstanding.
Open source is the modern marvel that nobody talks about. Like the industrial revolution or the building of the pyramids. I know it’s preaching to the choir on lemmy. Open source made the 21st century digital revolution.
Sometimes I wonder how much the average person can comprehend the scale of what has been accomplished over the past few decades. I’m sure they attribute it to the power of the corporations’ drive for profit. None of that would have happened without the combined effort of people around the world building out one software library or application at a time. There’s a behemoth underneath the shiny corporate tech products that is the real achievement.
Some say, born to late to yadda born to soon to whatever. Guy, we have lived in very interesting times. You just haven’t been looking. We’ve lived through the middle of something incredible. I’m sure Jim Ramses was super annoyed at another brick to haul back in 10000BC so the pharaoh can have his stupid tomb or whatever. He wasn’t thinking, they’re going to be nuts over this stuff in a few millennia.
That being said, I think open source is facing existential trials in the near future.
Open source made the 21st century digital revolution.
It’s hard to even convey how very true this is.
Basically all of network infrastructure depends on open libraries. All of the most widely used cryptography standards are open source. There was a period when basically every server on the internet was an Ubuntu/Apache stack. The Internet Protocol itself is open, and would not function otherwise.
Open source is the Internet. The Internet is open source.
Could not agree more. Fuck AI.
I’ve seen open source software devs fix niche little bugs I reported within hours of reporting it. Feels good.
How do you use the symbols?
In the settings you can change which symbol set is in use. For example you can use Japanese kanji numbers replacing the Roman numerals. The numerals at the bottom of the screen on the keypad also change to match, so you just press the corresponding button. You can also use a few others and it is a really nice if niche feature.
By hand.
Me and everyone else with JXL in the browsers.
I’m still pissed that Google essentially hostaged every browser into not supporting JXL in favor of AVIF because cheap ass google wanted to save on future cloud storage costs.
Firefox literally had JXL years ago but it was a “test feature” you needed to enable manually.
Now all of a sudden Chrome gets support and Firefox follows like the good little dog Mozilla is.
Jellyfin letting me set a number of episodes to play before it stops. 👍
Not that nieche, I bet a lot of people wanted it. Kinda surprised it took til v12
I implemented the “frame seek” functionality using the
,and.keys a year back, was merged in v12. You’re welcome.Huh, this is something I have never thought of, and I’m not really sure what it’s for… but it sounds like the idea is that you say upfront “play me the next 3 episodes of this show”, and then it plays 3 automatically, and after the third takes you back to the menu? Fascinating.
It’s for people who use TV or spoken audio (podcast / radio show) as an environmental sleep aid / sleep cue. Electronics in general are suboptimal options for this but it’s a common one that works well enough for some people.
They’re falling asleep to it, but they’re usually still kinda paying attention to the chronological plot, so they want it to keep their place just after they slip into unconsciousness so they can just rewind 30-60min and keep watching from where they were instead of waking up 8 hours and a full season into the show later.
Also some similar utility for people watching TV while doing chores who are just gonna kind of wander off near the end.
Wow, different worlds…
But I’m glad those people have a nice feature in Jellyfin now!
My college roommate used to play Family Guy on his laptop all night to help him sleep. It meant that I didn’t get any sleep that entire semester.
For me it’s an AuDHD thing that covers attention issues as well as sensory ones.
In my case, I don’t listen to shows where I’d need this Jellyfin feature. It’s usually videos of playthroughs or speedruns of old video games. It provides constant music while also having some progression to follow with the sound effects and changing tracks. So not unlike listening to a show in that sense.
Having something to pay attention to keeps my mind from racing and keeps me from worrying about whether I’m falling asleep fast enough.
And for whatever neurological reason, having constant sounds in my ears is soothing. In the same way quiet game sounds help me get to sleep, having some loud thrash metal in my ears helps me focus and get things done whether it’s writing code or doing yard work.
My personal theory is that audio-based stimulus helps press the pause button on my non-stop internal dialogue.
Night shift psych is kinda like specifically being a sleep specialist lol. My personal sleep cue is a raging thunderstorm. Honestly I wish I had more options for providing sleep ambiance to patients but the institutional setting is notoriously stingy. What I really wanna know is why men sleep with their hands in their pants / over their genitals. It doesn’t read as arousal most of the time, so it must just be a regular comfort thing somehow.
Hmm, interesting! I’m a man myself, and to the best of my knowledge don’t sleep with my hands near my groin. So it feels like maybe whatever it is, either the discomfort of the situation, or the cause of the situation, might lead to it in some way?
For me - it’s cats. They know exactly where to jump on the bed while I’m asleep. I try to side sleep now but if I’m on my back I’m protecting 😂
Your post leaves me with a lot of questions. But as for the hand in pants thing, they probably had siblings or roommates at some point who thought it was funny to wake people up by tagging them in the balls.
You can now toggle file extension exports to either be uppercase or lowercase
This tickles the 'tism.
GTA5 finally added the ability to make your own missions not too long ago, but only after I stopped giving a shit about playing the game.
Sync for Lemmy will be fixed any day now…
I can fix her
I’m sure dev has abandoned it completely.
I want to make my cursor increasingly grow when I wiggle it.
I assume this is a sarcastic reference to KDE Plasma, but in case you dont know, KDE does that and i love it
Sure, but what if I want my cursor to be vector based and stay sharp as fuck on screen even when it’s huge?
Boy have I got good news for you…
90% Chance that person knows that already
… that’s the joke.
In case you don’t know, KDE does that
And if you want your cursor to just go where you put it, stay there, and not be so damn extra… XFCE does that.
Those who do not learn from Comet Cursor are doomed to repeat it.
Genuine queation: what? Ive never had an issue with my cursor being in the wrong place or not exactly where i want it?
that’s the fun part, kde does that too! its never in the way
which DE is moving the cursor around without human input?
Mac does it too, since quite some time. But only to like 5x the size.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEAUCtlSBjE somebody postes this here months ago
On cachyOS, it has this feature but there is no upper bound to how much it increases. So if you just keep shaking it, it grows to fill the entire screen. Lol
I too want some things to grow when I wiggle them 😏
Them?
M’theydy
If we are talking gnome that will never happen. Sorry.
I just installed Fedora Linux on my old Winblows Surface 3 tablet. It does this, and it’s pretty fun to mess with.
My MacBook does this as well
I completely get this. You check it so often that you start to recognize the usual reviewers and the little back-and-forth, and then one day that small feature you have been hoping for finally lands. It is funny how satisfying something so specific can feel after waiting that long.
Some know the OP is into GitLab more than GitHub ^^
At this point I should just set invent.kde.org as my new tab page.
Starting at a new company that uses Gitlab instead of Github was a culture shock for sure. I still slip up and say PR sometimes instead of MR
krille-chan still refusing to review my room order and subspace categorization feature request for FluffyChat even though I’ve already created a mockup by directly forking and modifying the source code (twice):
When you have submitted multiple PRs and they get ignored even though you follow their ridiculously complicated CI and testing guidelines, so you just fork the repo and do whatever you want. (And then hope things don’t break a year from now because you aren’t pulling any new features and fixes.)
I wish I had the drive to learn to really program instead of just small scripts and BS, but im sure I’d just spend all my time keeping up with the code base and trying to follow guidelines that I’d add nothing to the project.
Factorio allows you to transfer items between space stations now.
IDK if that’s the kind of thing the post is about, and there has certainly not been 5 years. Also, no time for Yay!, because I’m busy designing some space platform fabric…
I can remember back when that one feature I waited for was a functioning DX11 driver like the box fucking said. Fucking AMD…
What feature are you waiting for? 🙂
I’m waiting for Linux 7.4 to drop so I can have non-Steam games working with my Switch 2 Pro Controller out of the box.
I would recommend the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless. I’m using that as my main, for Rocket League and other games. Works great. Cheaper and better than Xbox controllers, PS controllers, even Nintendo’s ones. I think I paid around $40–50 for it. Much, much better quality than my Xbox Elite Series 2 controller, which was almost $200 and now barely works.
I doubt there is a better deal at present than the Gamesir Nova Lite, but Gamesir keeps undercutting themself.
https://gamesir.com/products/gamesir-nova-lite
Dual hall effect sticks (no dead zone, that’s right, zero dead zone), wireless USB, bluetooth, and wired functionality for $25. That’s $5 less than the MSRP on the Logitech F710.
The 8BitDo has TMR sticks and Hall effect triggers though, which is even better. Worth the extra money IMO, but of course opinion based.
KeepassXC autotype on wayland.
Just a few more years…
Edit: Holy shit nvm, literally release 2 days ago. I am happy.
I see that edit! 😂🎉
I just saw this and thought of you!
https://programming.dev/post/58400011
This is your day! 🫶
That would be aight!
Any good video player for xiaomi HyperOS (vlc cannot be switched away from and you don’t have a “next” button, all others have different sync problems or cannot find files in hidden folders etc etc).
Oof, sounds very annoying 😦
hidden folders
Heh…just put it in a folder called “homework”. They’ll never catch you.
Typeahead in Nautilus
Did that go away at some point? I thought we had that since forever?
It got replaced with a search function. It searches as you type and filters your view as it finds things. Typeahead just jumps to to first file that matches your input.
Ah. I had to do some deep reading to find that this can sometimes be called typeahead search. 😅 I get you. Myeah. One of the reasons why I like to just use the terminal, or terminal file browsers like yazi.
You can find more info here: https://gitlab.gnome.org/Teams/Design/whiteboards/-/work_items/142 and here: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/-/merge_requests/1030
Yeah it’s weird that this is not default versus initiating a deep search on type. I would expect a file/directory selection when typing a letter, only files in the current directory, like you describe.
This post claims it went missing around 2012: https://discourse.gnome.org/t/search-vs-the-old-type-ahead-find/772
We’ll probably never see it in the official version, but at least there’s forks that reimplement. Note that in this thread a GNOME dev says that the suggested patch to reimplement typeahead is of bad quality and to expect bugs, but I’ve been running this patched version for so many years now, I’ve never encountered a bug related to the typeahead search, ever. They’re just being stubborn for no reason.
Then the project gets archived 6 months later and nobody forks it…
