To this day I still have no idea what it is, and I don’t wanna bother looking it up.

I assumed it’s probably due to some creators becoming, or later being discovered as, “problematic” and/or some sort of brand risk. It would look more strange to unlist a few of them, so better to unlist all of them.

To be clear: This is speculation based on zero information 🙃. Just a total guess based on how things tend to go between internet culture and corporations. I’m probably wrong. It would be cool if YouTube would communicate things like this.

It’s unfortunate to see such cultural history hidden away. Though, tbh, this is probably the most that I’ve ever thought about YouTube Rewind, and I haven’t thought about it in many years.

never been happier to have only followed the grace, hannah, mamrie, tyler, hank, john, and dan + phil youtuber scene.

Why is this even mildly infuriating? Who’s that emotionally invested in a corporation and a bunch of influencers patting each other on the back?

I gotta ask, is this a common thing? I’ve never seen any of that. Not that I don’t believe it exists, but I have a hard time believing it’s among the most popular topics.

go open youtube in a private tab and see how long it takes for an innocuous video to get a recommended video from the manosphere, rightwingtube, or magaworld. youtube pushes nazi shit hard. if they’re not pushing it on you, it usually means their mathematical model for determining who right wing propaganda works best on indicates you’re not a good target, in which case they’ll mostly push meaningless drivel.

youtube and youtube culture have been dying a right wing nazi death for a decade now. all the best things people were doing are on patreon and nebula now

In early first trump presidency there was a very real and concerning centrist to nazi pipeline on YouTube

The shifts to the nazi right in america have been a decades long psyop.

You can never kill an idea.

And the efficiency to eugenics pipeline was always there, just waiting for people to lack long term vision and collective goals.

    That’s a bit sad

They were kinda little time capsules of various corners of YouTube adjacent internet culture over time

It was a great way of showing off YouTube talent. There were meaningful trends on YouTube for a while and these videos were a way to celebrate what went viral for the year.

That these videos are harder to make speaks a lot to how YouTube has changed as a platform.

Marketing videos, mostly. Ostensibly they’re original videos showcasing some of the talent and content from the previous year. The last couple of years have been particularly bland, though, as I understand it.

I’m so tired of all the bad faith bs on this site.

In the past the videos were always shit and people would thus shit on them in the comments/ratings, so it might be to hide how much shittier it’s getting. For example if there is so much generated content that it would take up a chunk of the video, or it might even be that they’ve fired the talent who normally create the rewinds and replaced them with AI, which would be fairly obvious to detect if it was used for this kind of thing because it probably would do a shit job. *If they are not producing them anymore.

I’ve been on YouTube from pretty much the start and have never seen a Rewind. Do only Americans get them?

They were a video published and produced by Youtube themselves, showing the most popular videos on the platform, making jokes, etc. It’s the same video for everyone. It’s not like the “rewinds” some companies do showing your activity for the year.

Here is 2013( I think this was the best one).
