I love the fact that I never turned into this guy that hates the new stuff. I wasn’t hating fidget spinners when everybody hated them, I liked Fortnite, I think skibidi toilet is fun and such. But just as I didn’t like some trends when I was young myself (e.g. I never wanted to join the Gangnam style dance), I do find it disappointing that 67 is so popular, because I loved the fact that 69 is funny because of sex.

Atleast 69 had a context. 67 literally was a kid spurting out a random number.

I always wondered when I’d stop being the one being hated by adults and start being the one hating kids. I always wondered what it would be that I “didn’t get”. I thought, I’m tech savvy. I don’t know in what way I would be left behind by future generations. I could not have predicted this.

This is why I cannot dislike the 67 meme. I don’t actively like it or anything but we have our own funny number and there were 42 as well and 21 for a while.

There are definitely things to criticize about the new generation, I am not denying that, but finding a number amusing is too inoffensive for me to care.

XKCD made me aware of the fact that this sorta joke has been going on since way before any of us were born. 23 skidoo is an old trendy phrase that’s made up of two jokes that mean nothing definable on their own

      Today’s 67 is 1899’s 23

      From the XKCD alt text:

In 1899, people were walking around shouting `23’ at each other and laughing, and confused reporters were writing articles trving to figure out what it meant.

When asked by Complex[7] about the meaning of the numbers, Skrilla said, “Everybody else got their own different meaning. But for me, it’s just ‘negative to positive.’ It helped me turn from a negative person to a positive person.”

In a comment to the Wall Street Journal[11] from the same timeframe, he also said, “I never put an actual meaning on it, and I still would not want to … That’s why everybody keeps saying it.”

So it’s a number repeated in a song that the artist says has no meaning, instead of it just being a meaningless number.

Glad you helped clear that up. Way to prove everyone wrong.

I would argue that it has an origin but lost its meaning since the people who use it don’t know the meaning. At this point, it’s more than anything a cultural signifier which isn’t a new thing either. People try to belong to an ingroup and adopt their insider even if only as marker of that group.

        10-67 means something.

The 67 meme literally means nothing. It’s not even referencing the code, or the song it originally went viral to which was referencing the police code.

TBF though, the Slop Posting isn’t comparable at all. Slop is actual negative value given form.

There is a point where random noises become a song. Disposability of culture is, to my eye, a novelty that hasn’t yet reached the point of becoming a song. It’s just random noises, and I want to silence them with a heavy pipe to the throat

    Could say the same for:

    Politics.

    Religion.

    Ethnic groups.

    Sport teams.

    Cola preference.

Cutting some bits off your genitals or not.

    Operaring systems.

    Humans are a hoot, huh?

Politics at its root is ideals about how to structure society though. It does, however, devolve into a team sports mentality in a lot of cases, which is I think what you’re getting at.

Yea, several of those things have actual qualitative and quantitative measurements on which they can be compared, but far be it from the common dingdong to think in such lofty terms…

Wait, who the hell is pro genital mutilation!?

… Oh wait, Jews do circumcision… siiiiigghhhh

(I’m also aware some areas of India/middle east do FGM too, but I don’t remember if it’s for anything close to religous reasons)

Circumcision happens all over. It’s popular in the US, Africa, and Middle east especially.
