Because it’s a legal industry in Australia as well, yet the sex workers I know have said people treat them worse than other workers.
That’s a different can of worms. As far as I know most people respect the profession. But I don’t know how the customers are though.
Sex work is just work
Work drives the fun out of anything, I wonder if the same happens with sex workers and sex, or if they’re still able to find enjoyment.
Why? You just support sexual exploitation of vulnerable people. Maybe improve the economy so they can fuck for fun.
So prostitution is exploitation but factory workers, skyscraper window cleaners, and tree fellers aren’t? All labor is exploitation if prostitution is. Keep your puritan bullshit to yourself please, we don’t want any.
Sex workers are workers like any other, we are all exploited and sell our bodies for labour under capitalism. To treat their career as somehow worse means you degrade their work and think less of them.
Support independent consenting sex workers only. Do not support human trafficking. I know it’s a bummer but the reality has to be acknowledged and some people need to be protected. I hope the former category can eventually eliminate the demand for the latter category which can only happen if the work is de-stigmatized.
Legalizing and supporting something like a sex worker union or guild would most likely cut way down on trafficking … there may be a stigma around the customer that persists due to the ‘puritan’ origins of the US, but the major cities should lead the push

The problem with “supporting sex workers” are the number of people that first feel the need to first disclaim that they do not partake. Consider the sentence “I support gardeners, but myself would never use their services.” Like of course, you don’t need a gardener in order to think they should have the same protection from random and systemic abuse from the general public and the legal system.
Yea it gives me big ick when people do that. Oh good heavens no I would never use the services of a sex worker. But er, support them, I guess.

I think going to sex workers had a very good positive impact on my mental health. It made me feel less anxious and more accepting of other people. I like spending part of the time talking to them to know about their stories. If you put all theatrics of love away, it is a good way to meet open minded women. It’s a shame that it gets so demonized
I can honestly imagine being a sex worker in some ways is very similar to being a therapist. I’m sure a good number of people who visit sex workers go for very complex reasons other than just wanting sex and to get the heck out of there after.

legalisation does help to fight the criminal exploitive networks behind prostitution but it does not prevent them
i’m from a central european country where prostitution is legal, but we still have a lot of human trafficking going on.
in this globalised capitalist world it is always cheaper and more profitable to traffic persons from the global south than setting up a legal business that pays taxes and social welfare deductions.
the problem is that these prostituted people aren’t even in a legal residency situation, so they couldn’t work in this sector legally (if they even chose to, a lot of them are trapped by false promises and once they here it’s too late for them to escape)
