People dont seem to be scrutinizing though. Its genuinely unhinged and often completely misinformed. They will jump on a single line of a legal text and use it to springboard into a world of scenarios even when Mozilla is saying its not true.

Sorry man, but the minute Firefox added that keylogger, I dipped.
Firefox rendering engine is dogshit and they are massively behind.
This coming from someone that was using Netscape and Mozilla and Firefox since its release.
Firefox doesn’t include a keylogger. It does have the infamous privacy preserving attribution but this can easily be disabled in settings.
In contrast, Chrome is literally a tool for Google to gain as much personal information as possible for Googles advertisement platform. It has the worst privacy features of the three major browsers and cannot be fully made private due to crippled extension support.
Firefox engine has some catching up to do, but the Safari rendering engine is behind Firefox on features.

I don’t know what you’re on about. There is no keylogger and I don’t have any issues with the engine unless it’s some weird ass “chrome experiments” style website which I couldn’t care less about.
I find LibreWolf to be the better option for privacy, I never have an issue with rendering.

All of the current browsers have major drawbacks. Brave has many features that other browsers don’t offer. They’ve made what is quickly becoming the industry standard adblocker, being adopted by Firefox, Waterfox, Comet, and even Ladybird browser. No extensions required.
Most browsers don’t allow you to easily toggle on and off certain privacy features on a per-site basis. That’s why I use it primarily.
Origin is free on Linux.
Until Servo and Ladybird are ready, this strikes the best balance for privacy and usabllity, in my opinion

I don’t know what “certain features” are. LibreWolf lets me easily enable WebGL on per-site basis and uBlock could always do that anyway. I don’t need to touch anything else.

Yes, and you can also toggle everything off via config. That does not matter, it’s still a scummy move that should be ridiculed. How, exactly, is a dashboard that toggles some settings on or off is worth 60 dollars? It’s not “paying for convenience” it’s a tax on tech incompetency.

That’s okay because that’s not what’s happening, as I’ve already explained. It is a purchase, not a donation. It’s not a novel approach, many other beloved FOSS software take a similar approach to secure funding. Off the top of my head, Zorin OS, Immich, OSMAnd, OnlyOffice, Cryptpad, etc.

No, but brave “shields”, aka pre installed but shittier unlock origin, can sometimes break plex or other sites that require certain things that could look like trackers

I don’t have a strong opinion on brave, but here’s some reasons I can think of:
- cryptocoin shit
- based on chromium (so using this instead of firefox, for example, increases google’s hegemony – and this is true: even though chromium is open source, google completely controls its direction)
- CEO is a homophobe
- scammy business practices like inserting affiliate codes in urls
And this is just the stuff that I know from the top of my head. I don’t particularly care about this topic, so I’m sure there’s more. Although, having written all this out, I can sense that my opinion of Brave has worsened significantly.

They still run their own ad network and search engine, They’re definitely down to sell you out if you let them.
If you never sign up for the crypto, or use the VPN, and remove the buttons, it won’t hurt you.
If you run a plugin you can remove their newtab / default page
If you change the settings you can move off their search.

The only thing you’re getting out of them that’s above any other de-googled option is their anti-fingerprinting which is a little better than the others.
The other reason you’d run them is because they have a paid development staff blocking Youtube ads and they’re not doing it at the plugin level, so it’ll likely outlast the plugin models in Youtube’s race to piss people off.
In the end, if you’re in it for the paid blocking, doesn’t hurt to pay them something if you’re turning off all the stuff they’re using to make money on you.
If you’re in it for any other reason, there are literally dozens of forks you could use that give you the same experience that aren’t trying to sell you as their product.

It’s sold as a privacy-focused browser but it doesn’t actually have a good track record or features for it. The company has made several questionable choices.

Apparently it was an auto complete issue that was fixed within 48 hours, but even still, there’s always something wrong with Brave multiple times a year

There are so many browsers! It’s hard to decide. I’ve tried quite a few over the years. Been running Brave as primary for 3-4 years.

I do like that Brave works well on all my devices and sync is reliable. I don’t like running different browsers on diff platforms.

Eh, I use it for watching youtube.
For some reason (likely youtube fighting my adblockers) I get tons of errors and issues with youtube on firefox. But Brave works alright, and also blocks the ads. So it’s my dedicated youtube browser.

Gotta refresh em sometimes. When ublock stops managing youtube perfectly, I reload all the filters. Sometimes I don’t even need to close out the browser, just the filters.
The bad news is, if you’re not on Team Tux, you’re going to have to pay $60 for Brave Origin. Granted, you only need to buy it once, and you’ll get unlimited activations across all of your devices.
