Screenshot of Octopi Package Manager installed on CachyOS (previously the default before being replaced by Shelly). OP has searched for microsoft-edge. No results are returned.
OP has drawn a circle around a button in the image of an alien head with an arrow pointing to it. Under the arrow is “???”.
Caption at the bottom of the image reads: “Microsoft edge and google chrome don’t show up in neither of cachyos’ software stores out of the box. On octopi you can make it show up by pressing the weird alien head icon. “Mysteriously” firefox shows up on both stores immediately without clicking any obscure buttons. This is either extremely terrible i design or a deliberate sabotage attempt against microsoft and google from loonix devs, possibly sponsored by mozilla.”
Context:
OP is an idiot because these browsers would not be available due to restrictions required by Microsoft and Google to share their software, which is why nothing shows up when searching the installed repositories. Note that Chromium, the base for Edge and Chrome is available on the default repository.
The alien head icon searches the AUR (Arch User Repository) a place for users to add packages, often mirrored from GitHub, which would show Edge and Chrome as a user has ported it over unofficially. Because the AUR consists of unofficial packages, it is not part of the default repositories, and requires additional confirmation before installation.
Note that when installing from the AUR, it is always important to read what you are compiling as packages are not checked for malicious code. See recent news regarding compromised packages that weren’t maintained.
I actually find it kind of funny that MSFT does have an official linux release for Edge but not for Office.
It would seem like they want it to be a Windows only feature as a way to keep people on Windows, but they have a Mac release of it eith the full feature set lol.
That’s for practical reasons.
Edge is Google Chrome underneath. So a linux release isn’t much more dev effort on Microsoft’s part.
But they develop Office, and obviously linux was never a commercial target for it.
There’s also the secondary reason which is they barely give a shit about the local office apps and want you to use 365 and the in browser versions.
I’m surprised they even offer the office suite local at all anymore.
Well, they want your browsing data for one so that would make sense, but for Office they don’t want businesses hoping to Linux to get away from Windows if the business suite was available there. Since Office is the “industry standard” they just hold it hostage. If Libre Office adoption ever takes off, I’m sure Microsoft will port it over to recoup lost revenue, but that will only happen if they get desperate.
As for Mac, they may have just broken Office for Mac for a lot of users.
There’s a nugget of truth here.
Linux distros require some understanding of underlying subsystems.
Windows… in theory, does not. From AverageUser9000’s perspective, they can hit the Windows key, type “Google Chrome,” and install it, while on linux it’s not immediately obvious why it doesn’t. You’d have to look up documentation on linux repos, 3rd party repos, containerized stores, and… now you’ve just lost the interest of 99% of the population.
I’m not saying AverageUser9000 isn’t a moron, but I kind of sympathize too. We are effectively linux experts, and:

Do you have a link to the source?
Another day of dark patterns and anti-competitive practices against big tech. Typical for free and open-source software. /s
Who’d have thunk Arch would have an Eternal September?
It’s a rolling month
possibly sponsored by mozilla
This is funny as shit
Guess we’re already at the point where people make up wild conspiracy theories just to criticize Firefox.
Always have been 🔫
The kind of bullshit I’ve seen here on Lemmy alone.
Because it’s a circlejerk sub. It’s meant to be funny
Some of those loonies absolutely believe what they preach. Even if it means disregarding objective reality and engaging in fallacies like they’re a safety blanket. They’re the flat Earthers of the Unix-like world, and some of them much worse.
You’re proving them right.
It’s not, check it out…
I rather liked the AUR when I had it, sadly I needed a flatpak for a project, and my previous distro threw a fit when I attempted to get things working regardless, so now I’m on Pop!.
You’ll notice another blatant act of sabotage: LibreOffice is easy to find but Word is nowhere to be found.
Did you know ?
OpenOffice is a firewall product !

For context it is a french lawmakers casually explaining that OpenOffice has a firewall… And other random bullshit.
Well I mean fire bad…
Aliens’ heads are smooth and grey, just like OP’s brain.
What mental gymnastics does one have to do to come to that conclusion?
Going to the Microsoft gym for all their life
Believing a circlejerk sub is insane isn’t it.
Until you find out it’s not one.
I mean I’d assume anyone calling it “loonix” is circlejerking
oh dear lord
what was his defense when presented with the concept of a software license
I’m too scared to look
I’m looking at the top posts this week.
It’s a circlejerk sub.
Reminds me of a post I saw on here the other day.
Of course there’s always that “lol I’m just joking” until the joke becomes the new reality, but this ain’t it
poor wittle megacorporations
i will continue to assume they’re rdrama type noxious dipshits
Linucksucks is a circlejerk sub.
Taking it seriously just proves their point.
People on Lemmy take everything extremely seriously. I see so many shitposts and fake texts that people treat as if they’re 100% real and genuine.
It’s both funny and kinda sad.
So many lemmites don’t have much going on so they treat their interests as core personality treats.
They are dead serious though.
They’re absolutely serious. Here’s a post defending telemetry. The mod accuses anyone who speaks well of Linux as a “evangelists” and bans them.
It’s not the “lol birds aren’t real” kinda jerk, it’s the “the earth is flat” kind.
The funny part is that despite telemetry that shows how little people interact with Copilot, it still gets shoved down our throats.
Nobody writing anything seriously is going to use Notepad, and yet…
Dude.
You scrolled past 3 weeks of posts to find one that’s not obviously a joke.
Stop proving them right.
Actually no. I had shared that link somewhere 3 weeks ago in a chat and just copied it over. But whatever bro
Is the Reddit one serious? I know the lemmy.world one created by madthumbs appears to take itself seriously.
