8 hours to pay the landlord, 8 hours to pay the other bills, 8 hours for everything else
Labor Day is just a government worker holiday, everyone else other than banks just get fucked
Half of those “8 hours for what we will” are spent getting ready for, transportation between, and decompressing from the work hours. After time for cooking, cleaning, shopping, and other chores, we still get very little of the “what we will” hours.
You didn’t mention unpaid lunch time, making sure you get there before clock in, any phone calls or emails that happen after hours, taking kids to daycare, and all the little things that you wouldn’t be doing if it wasn’t for your job. I guess that comes out of the “8 hours of sleep” time.
Yeah, life was a lot simpler when your wife/servant prepped all your food and work was a fifteen minute walk away.
That’s the world executives still live in, contributing significantly to the disconnect between their realities and those of their workers.
When the 40 hour work week was brought in, working men were expected to have a wife at home to do all the household labour.
“8 hours for what we will” gets eroded pretty quickly now that both of you are expected to work.
It’s also non-consecutive. 8hrs split over morning & eve feels much shorter
How early do you get up? I only get up in time to grab a coffee and a snack before work.
gotta take away commuting time as well
And lunch used to be included in the 8 hours of work. And paid. Now it’s an unpaid hour you can’t really use.
Wholesale theft.
I reaalllyyyy like the 4 4 4 movement as a modern successor to this:

What would 4 months for democracy entail?
Meeting with your various neighborhood planning committees, sending/being a representative at the larger region’s committee of neighborhood committees, etc etc.
Arguing with idiots
Labor Day was created in the US to distance us laborers from the global labor movement’s chosen day, May 1st. A day that was largely established upon events that occurred into the US
Now it’s 6 for sleep, 12 for work and 6 for the side hustle…
We are tired
The 8/8/8 hours scheme is a lie:
8 hours of work + 0,5-1 hour break at work + 1-2 hours of travel from/to work + 1-2 hour household (cooking, washing clothes, grocery shopping, …) + 6-8 hours of sleep = 16,5-21 hours
This leaves 3-7,5 hours of free time per day.
This feels like billionaire propaganda. “Everything’s balanced and fair, we already give you 16 off. Work hard in the eight you give us” or something
It is literally a labor slogan dating back to the 1800s.
In 1872, a group of Toronto printers went on strike, fighting for a nine-hour work day. (The standard work day was 10 to 12 hours at the time.) The workers’ demand to reduce their hours had been refused by print shop owners, and in particular, George Brown, a respected father of Confederation and founder of The Globe, a predecessor to The Globe and Mail.
…
Ten thousand people marched in support of the workers to Queen’s Park.
…
Many of the printers lost their jobs, but the incident led then prime minister Sir John A. Macdonald, a rival of Brown’s who was keen to gain worker support, to legalize union activities. In the years that followed, unions across North America pushed for shorter work days, and the eight-hour day eventually became standard.
…
There’s some dispute around the origins of America’s Labor Day, but some historians believe U.S. labour leader Peter J. McGuire, inspired after visiting a Toronto labour gathering, organized the first American Labor Day parade in 1882.
